ADVERTISEMENT Seven bodies had been pulled from the rubble and hope was all but gone for another 40 miners believed to be buried deep below the surface with no ventilation or safety equipment, officials said. "The evacuation process is very difficult because the miners are estimated to be trapped in the shaft at a depth of about 200 metres (660 feet)," disaster response official Adriyusman told AFP from the scene. "Official data shows that 24 miners are trapped but it might be more than that." Seven bodies had been found -- five at a depth of around 50 metres and two outside the mine -- but officials believe the toll will rise once the collapsed shaft is properly searched. Senior health ministry crisis official Rustam Pakaya said 40 miners remained unaccounted for. The blast occurred around 9:00 am (0200 GMT) at a mine owned by local residents in Sawah Lunto district, West Sumatra province. It was heard 1.5 kilometres (about a mile) away, sent flames 50 metres into the air and left a huge crater where the mine operations had been, officials said. "According to witnesses there was an explosion caused by methane gas. Methane gas is the main threat to local miners and there have been several explosions before," provincial disaster management chief Ade Edward said. The miners were using traditional methods, with little or none of the safety measures required by law in most countries. Some of the survivors were severely burned. "Two are in very critical condition, with 40 percent and 70 percent burns respectively. The skin on their body is peeling all over," said doctor Antony Kurniawan, from Sawah Lunto city hospital. Twenty rescue workers had entered the collapsed mine with specialised equipment including oxygen tanks. "I'm pessimistic that anyone will survive because their bodies might have been completely incinerated in the explosion," said emergency response worker Adriyusman, who like many Indonesians uses only one name. He said dense pockets of methane gas remained trapped below the surface, hampering rescue efforts. Industry sources said illegal mines regularly collapsed in Indonesia but most incidents went unreported. "Safety is one of the main issues in illegal mines -- they have no standard operating procedures," said a Jakarta-based coal marketer who did not want to be identified. "A lot of miners get killed but it is not reported by the relevant parties or the media." Even legal mines are poorly supervised. A gas drilling operation linked to one of the country's biggest conglomerates allegedly triggered a massive mud volcano on Java in 2006, killing 13 and displacing some 40,000 people. Indonesia has the largest coal reserves in the Asia-Pacific region behind Australia, India and China, according to the World Coal Institute. It is the world's second largest coal exporter after Australia.
