Strikes have hit Greece in response to a call for a national protest against draft austerity measures just as government plans to fight a debt crisis reeled from another credit downgrade. ATHENS (AFP) - – Strikers took to the streets across Greece on Thursday in protest at the socialist government's austerity measures aimed at heading off national bankruptcy. Thousands of workers walked off the job under a nationwide strike call, as the finance minister toured European capitals seeking to salvage Greece's credibility after a new credit rating downgrade. School teachers, state hospital doctors and dock workers and journalists went on strike, but two key socialist-led transportation unions did not join the action. Communist unions called the strike and protests were held in Athens and an estimated 60 other towns across Greece. Anger has mounted since Prime Minister George Papandreou on Monday ordered a curb on public sector hiring, reduced civil servant benefits and increased taxes. As pressure on the Greek government, the European Central Bank said that Greek Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou was to meet the ECB vice president Lucas Papademos on Thursday. The ECB has given Greece 12 months retrieve its credit rating which has been cut by several agencies. The Socialist government, which took power on October 4, is being squeezed by financial markets -- scared by the downgrades -- and by European Union officials alarmed about the cohesion of the eurozone. Papaconstantinou, commenting in London on the latest credit downgrade by Standard and Poor's, said: "We were clearly disappointed." He said: "The responses I've got from investors are much more positive." Speaking before flying to Frankfurt for meetings with investors and the ECB, he declared: "We'll continue to work to convince our European partners and the investors community that everything is being done to start the process of controlling the debt." The ECB and Greece's EU partners have indicated that Athens can expect little help in dragging itself out of a debt morass estimated at 300 billion euros (436 billion dollars), three times the size of Germany's debt. S&P, which lowered Greece's long-term rating to BBB-plus from A-minus, also warned it could issue a new downgrade unless the government gets its finances in order. Markets are also on tenterhooks for a new report from a third main rating agency, Moody's, which is expected to issue a judgement by Christmas. It has warned Greece that its grade could be cut. Markets have responded sharply. The euro currency which Greece shares with 15 other countries has plunged to a three-month low against the dollar, falling to 1.4460 dollars in morning trading in Asia from 1.4533. The BBB-plus rating is still considered investment-grade but is below the ECB standard lending requirements. Another credit rating agency, Fitch, downgraded Greece to BBB-plus from A-minus last week. Greece's public deficit is likely to rise to 12.7 percent of output this year, exceeding the limit of 3.0 percent for countries which use the euro currency. The country is also mired in recession and has an unemployment rate of over nine percent. On Thursday, the Greek national statistics service said the jobless rate had risen to 9.3 percent in the third quarter of 2009 from 7.2 percent in the same period in 2008, with over 465,000 people officially out of work. Unions say the real figure is far higher. The rising pressure on Greece is reflected in the interest it will have to pay to borrow new funds. The yield on the Greek 10-year bond of 5.722 percent is 2.536 percentage points higher than the equivalent German bond yield. And the interest demanded from Greece has risen from 4.411 percent on October 8, four days after the government took office. Greek stocks were down another 1.88 percent at midday.
