McCartney and Starr reunite for meditation
ADVERTISEMENT
NEW YORK - The surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, performed together on Saturday to raise money to help kids learn a meditation technique the 1960s icons practiced at the height of their fame. McCartney was joined onstage by Starr for a rousing rendition of "With a Little Help From My Friends" at Radio City Music Hall at the Change Begins Within concert for the David Lynch Foundation, which promotes Transcendental Meditation.
Metallica rocks Hall of Fame
CLEVELAND - The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gave fans a trip through modern music history on Saturday, inducting a variety of performers into its ranks from "Queen of Rockabilly" Wanda Jackson to rappers Run-D.M.C and rockers Metallica. The climax for the Hall of Fame's induction ceremony came when Metallica, whose hits include "Enter Sandman," took the stage to play a medley of their hit songs. Two of the group's bassists, Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo, jammed together.
Madonna leaves Malawi after failed adoption bid
LILONGWE - Madonna left Malawi on a private aircraft on Sunday after failing to adopt a second child from the African country, airport officials said. Security forces blocked the road leading to the airport after Madonna's convoy arrived, preventing reporters from speaking to her or filming.
Judge allows Michael Jackson auction to proceed
LOS ANGELES - A judge on Friday denied Michael Jackson's attempt to rescue his Neverland Ranch possessions from an auction that will include memorabilia from the height of his 1980s popularity, but the pop star will get another hearing before the sale happens. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brett Klein ruled in favor of Julien's Auction House, which plans to sell about 2,000 Jackson items April 22-25 in Beverly Hills, California.
Thousands mourn Jade Goody
BUCKHURST HILL, England - Thousands of people turned out to bid farewell to reality TV star Jade Goody on Saturday, a fittingly public end for a woman whose life and death were pored over by the celebrity-obsessed media. The one-time dental assistant, who died last month of cervical cancer aged 27, found fame and fortune as a contestant on the popular reality television show "Big Brother."
Film industry abuzz about possible Cannes lineup
LOS ANGELES - As spring dawns, so does one of the film world's biggest questions, namely -- what's in the Cannes? The official announcement from Cannes film festival head Thierry Fremaux and his team of programmers regarding what's in store for the annual cinephile gathering won't take place for three weeks. But filmmakers, executives and sales agents are already buzzing about what will unspool at the event in May.
50 Cent joining Fall Out Boy for five concerts
DETROIT - It was rapper 50 Cent's proposal to play some shows with pop-punkers Fall Out Boy this month. But he didn't have to ask twice. "He came up with the idea, and we were like, 'Yeah. Totally. Yeah. Why not?," frontman Patrick Stump told Billboard. "He had been talking for a while about doing something together. We definitely like hip-hop a lot, and I think a lot of people know that at this point. We've toured with Paul Wall. We've had Lil Wayne on our record. I worked with Gym Class Heroes extensively. So I think it works."
Coldplay taps Pete Yorn for tour opener
NEW YORK - Coldplay has chosen singer-songwriter Pete Yorn to open for the band on more than a dozen dates of its spring tour. Yorn returns to active duty on June 23 with the release of "Back and Fourth," his first album since 2006's 'Nightcrawler." He's expected to highlight songs from "Back and Fourth" on the Coldplay dates.
Springsteen opens tour with flawed but rousing show
SAN JOSE, California - Opening nights drum up any number of feelings: anticipation, nervousness, optimism, trepidation. But mostly they are a peek at what's to come, and Bruce Springsteen and company made a statement Wednesday night: Maybe we ain't that young anymore, but we can still bring it. The first show of the new tour, at San Jose's HP Pavilion, certainly wasn't flawless; in fact, there was plenty to grumble about, from a cut-and-paste set list to Springsteen's surprising lack of interaction with the crowd. But it provided enough moments of sheer rock 'n' roll glee to offset any shortcomings.
"ER" finale draws 16.4 million TV viewers
LOS ANGELES - NBC hospital drama "ER" ended its 15-year run by drawing 16.4 million viewers for its final episode, the highest viewership for a drama finale since 1996, the U.S. network said on Friday. The two-hour show on Thursday night brought back "ER" alumni Noah Wyle and Eriq La Salle, as the staff at County General Hospital in Chicago treated a dying woman in labor, an AIDS patient and a comatose teenager with alcohol poisoning.
