Technology not as advanced by 2010 as some had hoped

NEW YORK - Despite iPods, genetic sequencing, the Internet and Twitter, nearly a third of Americans said they thought there would be more technological advances by the year 2010. Not everyone expected to be living like The Jetsons, the space age television cartoon series of the early 1960s, but the Zogby International survey of more than 3,000 adults in the United States showed many were less than enthusiastic about how far we have come by the dawn of a new decade.

Tweets, sexting "unfriended" in U.S. banned word list

KANSAS CITY - If you recently tweeted about how you were chillaxin for the holiday, take note: Fifteen particularly over- or mis-used words and phrases have been declared "shovel-ready" to be "unfriended" by a U.S. university's annual list of terms that deserve to be banned. After thousands of nominations of words and phrases commonly used in marketing, media, technology and elsewhere, wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University on Thursday issued their 35th annual list of words that they believe should be banned.

Apple wins appeal over alleged iPod hearing loss

NEW YORK - A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected a class-action lawsuit seeking to hold Apple Inc <AAPL.O> responsible for possible hearing loss caused by using its popular iPod music player. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco affirmed a 2008 district court ruling that the plaintiffs failed to show that use of the iPod poses an unreasonable risk of noise-induced hearing loss.

Nokia's latest patent strike on Apple a risk, but may pay off

HELSINKI - Nokia's latest patent strike against Apple underscores the changing dynamics of the cell phone market, with the sector leader no longer holding the whip hand over rivals in terms of product development. But analysts believe the risks involved in stepping into a legal minefield to help make up lost ground, notably in the fast-growing smartphone market, could pay dividends given the huge stock of patents Nokia has built up as a founding father of the handset industry.

Wide use of U.S. airport body scanners depends on Obama

NEW YORK - The path toward rolling out wider use of whole-body security scanners in U.S. airports runs through the White House. The failed Christmas Day attack aboard a Detroit-bound U.S. airliner has created congressional calls for greater use of body scanners that advocates say would have detected non-metallic items such as the explosives an Islamic militant from Nigeria is accused of smuggling on board.

AT&T asks FCC to set date to scrap old phone system

NEW YORK - AT&T Inc <T.N> told U.S. telecoms regulators that it should set plans for phasing out older telephone networks if the government wants to make high-speed Internet access available across the country. AT&T, the original U.S. phone operator, described older voice-based "circuit switched" telephone systems and service as "relics of a by-gone era" in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission dated December 21.

Google to hold Android event in early January

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said it will hold a briefing about its smartphone business at its headquarters next week as rumors continue to swirl that the Internet search giant is preparing to sell a Google-branded device. The company emailed invitations to the January 5 event, which it described only as "an Android press gathering," to the media on Tuesday.

Microsoft pegs China search market as top priority

SHANGHAI - China is a vital market for Microsoft's Web search business, as it chases leaders Baidu Inc <BIDU.O> and Google <GOOG.O> in the world's biggest Internet market, the world's largest software maker said. Since launching its English-language Bing search site in June, Microsoft has been gaining steady share in the United States, with 10.3 percent in November versus 17.5 percent for Yahoo <YHOO.O> and 65.6 percent for dominant player Google, according to comScore.

Target Co was victim of hacker Albert Gonzalez

BOSTON/NEW YORK - Target Co <TGT.N> said it was among the victims of computer hacker Albert Gonzalez, mastermind of the biggest identity theft in U.S. history. The 28-year-old college dropout pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges that he stole more than 170 million payment card numbers by breaking into corporate computer systems from businesses including Target.

ITC to probe charges RIM infringed patent

WASHINGTON - The International Trade Commission said on Tuesday that it would investigate allegations by Prism Technologies that BlackBerry maker Research in Motion <RIM.TO> violated one of its patents. Prism Technologies, whose one-page website says it does "Internet Security Technology Management and Licensing," accused RIM of violating a patent having to do with authentication systems.
