Singer Van Morrison denies baby report
DUBLIN/LOS ANGELES - Singer Van Morrison on Thursday denied that he had fathered a child with his manager, saying a widely reported statement that appeared on his website three days ago was the result of a hacking attack. Irish state broadcaster RTE published a statement signed by the publicity-shy blues and R&B singer-songwriter that says a birth announcement on his website on Monday was "completely and utterly without foundation."
Fox, Time Warner Cable ink deal to avoid blackout
NEW YORK - Time Warner Cable and News Corp's Fox Networks Group agreed to a brief extension of their current carriage contract late on Thursday to avoid a blackout that would have prevented 13 million U.S. homes from seeing TV shows like "The Simpsons" and "House" as well as college and NFL football games. The two sides continued to negotiate for a longer-term deal into the early hours of Friday morning.
Theater owners name Sandra Bullock 2009's top star
LOS ANGELES - In the eyes of U.S. movie theater owners, Sandra Bullock shined as 2009's top Hollywood star at the box office, as the actress nicknamed "America's Sweetheart" scored with audiences after a two-year absence from screens. Quigley Publishing Company's annual list released on Thursday of top money making stars, based on a poll of hundreds of theater executives, had Bullock beat out such stars as George Clooney and Denzel Washington, on the strength of her roles in "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side."
Radio's Rush Limbaugh has tests after chest pains
LOS ANGELES - Conservative U.S. radio commentator Rush Limbaugh, hospitalized in Hawaii with chest pains, faced a battery of medical tests on Thursday after a "good night's rest," his substitute host told listeners. Limbaugh, 58, fell ill on Wednesday while vacationing in Honolulu, said economist Walter Williams, filling in for America's top-rated talk radio personality since the start of Limbaugh's annual Christmas break last week.
Edgar Degas artwork stolen from French museum
MARSEILLE, France , the prosecutor said. Local media had originally said it was worth an estimated 30 million euros.
A Minute With: Bryce Dallas Howard in "Teardrop"
LOS ANGELES - After starring opposite giant robots in the action movie "Terminator: Salvation," Bryce Dallas Howard plays a debutante in 1920s Memphis in the film drama "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond." Based on an original Tennessee Williams screenplay, the independent film opens on Friday in major U.S. cities before expanding across the United States January 8.
U2 tour tops annual rankings in North America
LOS ANGELES - U2 may have suffered disappointing sales for their new album, but the Irish rockers were easily the most popular draw on the North American concert circuit this year, according to data issued on Wednesday. The band sold $123 million worth of tickets to its stadium tour, while Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band came in second with $94.5 million, said trade publication Pollstar.
Regis Philbin returns to "Live" in January
LOS ANGELES - Regis Philbin will return to "Live with Regis and Kelly" on January 4, having spent December recovering from hip replacement surgery. Scheduled to appear on "Live" the week of January 4 are Amy Adams, "Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe, Tim Allen, Jenna Elfman, Chris Meloni, Katharine McPhee and Capt. Chesley B. Sullenberger.
Ke$ha sets female download record in U.S.
NEW YORK - In what is traditionally a high-volume download week thanks to shiny new MP3 players under the tree and download cards stuffed in stockings, a digital sales mark has fallen by the wayside. Rookie pop singer Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" shifted 610,000 digital tracks for the week ending December 27, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That's the highest weekly sum by a female artist since tracking began in 2003, and the second-best overall after Flo Rida's "Right Round" sold 636,000 this past February. Coincidentally, Ke$ha was an uncredited singer on the track.
"Hangover" tops "District 9" on DVD sales chart
LOS ANGELES - The year is ending with quite a "hangover." The biggest R-rated comedy in Hollywood history, "The Hangover," hung on to the No. 1 spot on the national home video sales chart for the second consecutive week. The film, with box office sales of $277 million, beat back a stiff challenge from high-profile newcomer "District 9."
