"These brave Americans were part of a long line of patriots who have made great sacrifices for their fellow citizens, and for our way of life," wrote the President. "You have helped us understand the world as it is, and taken great risks to protect our country. You have served in the shadows, and your sacrifices have sometimes been unknown to your fellow citizens, your friends, and even your families." National Intelligence Director Dennis Blair said in a message sent the same day to the intelligence community that Obama's message was "direct in [its] assessment that intelligence failures were a contributing factor in the escalation of this threat." "This is a tough message for us to receive. But we have received it, and now we must move forward and respond as a team," Blair added. Seven CIA operatives were killed on Wednesday in an attack in at a forward operating base in Khost Province, Afghanistan. The intelligence agency and the U.S. Embassy in Kabul have not released details of the incident nor the information about the work of the victims. "Due to the sensitivity of their mission and other ongoing operations, neither the names of those killed nor the details of their work are being released at this time," CIA Director Leon Panetta said in a statement. Robert Richer, who served as the CIA's associate deputy director for operations until 2005, marked the deaths with an op-ed in the Washington Post on Friday that said, "They and their colleagues who compose the thin line of agency officers working in the shadows that surround this war are a national asset that is, sadly, often misunderstood and underappreciated. We must remember these fine officers for their service and sacrifice. Their devotion to their country and their agency deserves no less " The New Year's Eve attack is the deadliest for the agency since the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. It also comes a week after a failed terror attack on Christmas Day on a Northwest Airlines flight bound for Detroit by a man whose ties to al-Qaeda officials are still investigating. Blair said in his message the CIA and other agencies have made progress in "weakening al Qa'ida's ability to plan, organize, finance, and carry out highly orchestrated attacks conducted by well trained teams, like those on 9/11." He explained that the terror group's diminished capabilities has caused it to send "inexperienced individuals without long association with al Qa'ida, but susceptible to jihadist ideology." But the intelligence director also acknowledged, "Unfortunately, even unsophisticated terrorists can kill many Americans." There are currently 68,000 American troops in Afghanistan, where the U.S.-led war is on its eighth year.
