Asked to comment on why the event was cancelled, State Department spokesman Phillip J. Crowley deferred the answer for further consultations. State Department spokesman’s office later released an email statement saying, “The bilateral counterterrorism meeting scheduled for Ankara was postponed because the U.S. was not able to participate in the meeting at this time.” “Turkey is a valuable counterterrorism partner, and we anticipate that the meeting will be rescheduled,” the statement added. Earlier, the U.S. delegation, headed by State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin had canceled a scheduled counterterrorism meeting with Turkish officials in Istanbul.
