Wall Street gave a weak cue after upbeat industrial production figures were tempered by worse-than-expected housing data. Tokyo's Nikkei ended 0.67 percent lower, dropping 67.75 points to 9,999.40 and snapping a five-session rally, while Sydney shed 0.70 percent, or 31.7 points, to 4,527.3. And Shanghai, which returned after a three-day public holiday, ended 0.38 percent lower at 2,560.25. However, Hong Kong rose for a seventh straight session, adding 0.38 percent or 76.25 points to 20,138.40. Spanish business daily El Economista said the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the US Treasury had drawn up a plan for Spain, including a credit line of between 200 and 250 billion euros. The plan would use money from a special-purpose fund worth up to 500 billion euros put in place last month to help eurozone nations that run into Greek-style debt problems, the newspaper said. The IMF, the European Commission and the Spanish government have denied the report. Spain plunged into its worst recession in decades at the end of 2008 and only returned to tepid growth this year. However, unemployment has soared to more than 20 percent, the highest in the European Union after Latvia. "European debt troubles will likely remain as a risk for some time, but we are getting less sensitive to these problems," SK Securities analyst Won Jong-hyuck told Dow Jones Newswires in Seoul. The euro was pressured by the Spanish debt fears ahead of a summit of European Union leaders Thursday. The single currency was at 112.10 yen in Tokyo morning trade from 112.53. The dollar dropped to 91.35 yen from 91.38 while the euro also fell to 1.2276 dollars from 1.2299. The Commerce Department released data Wednesday showing US housing starts and building permits plunged in May, after the expiry of federal tax breaks. The number of new housing construction projects slumped 10 percent to 593,000, the lowest this year, and permits fell 5.9 percent to a one-year low of 574,000. The Federal Reserve reported stronger-than-expected US industrial production data for May while the Labor Department said producer prices dipped for the second consecutive month, easing any immediate inflation concerns. The Dow closed flat. Oil retreated from a surge above 78 dollars a barrel. New York's main futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in July, shed 73 cents to 76.94 dollars a barrel while London's Brent North Sea crude for August delivery was off 18 cents at 77.96 dollars. Gold closed at 1,232.00-1,233.00 US dollars an ounce in Hong Kong, down from Wednesday's close of 1,233.30-1,234.30 dollars. In other markets: -- Singapore fell 0.11 percent, or 2.99 points, to close at 2,843.95. Singapore Airlines was off 1.35 percent at 14.60 Singapore dollars and casino operator Genting Singapore added 0.88 percent to 1.12. -- Seoul closed 0.15 percent, or 2.59 points, up at 1,707.92. -- Taipei rose 0.83 percent, or 61.72 points, to 7,515.78. Formosa Chemicals and Fibre Corp. closed 3.46 percent higher at 74.8 Taiwan dollars while Nan Ya Plastics rose 1.83 percent to 55.5. -- Jakarta rose 1.14 percent, or 32.44 points, to 2,891.10. Bank Danamon rose 5.9 percent 5,400 rupiah, Bank Mandiri jumped 2.7 percent to 5,750 while tin miner Timah increased 3.5 percent to 2,225. -- Kuala Lumpur shares closed up 0.10 percent, or 1.34 points, at 1,304.47. Telecoms firm Axiata gained 0.30 percent to 3.87 ringgit, top bank Maybank rose 0.40 percent to 7.47 and gaming group Genting slid 1.40 percent to 7.15. -- Manila closed 0.18 percent, or 5.87 points, higher at 3,313.52. Philippine Long Distance Telephone rose 0.21 percent to 2,430 pesos, while Megaworld Corp gained 2.98 percent to 1.38 pesos. Metropolitan Bank and Trust fell 0.88 percent to 56 pesos. -- Wellington shed 0.68 percent, or 20.86 points, to end at 3,045.72. Telecom closed down 3.1 percent at 1.86 New Zealand dollars, Contact Energy lost 1.2 percent to 5.77 and Sky Network Television fell 1.4 percent to 4.95. -- Bangkok rose 0.34 percent or 2.70 points to close at 789.34. Banpu gained 2.00 baht to 636.00, while PTT Plc closed unchanged at 251.00 baht.
