The Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.KS11> finished down 2.29 percent or 37.73 points at 1,606.90, its lowest close since late August. "A weak set of U.S. economic data last week, including jobs data, came as a big disappointment to the market, which had been expecting surer signs of an economic turnaround," said Kim Young-june, a market analyst at SK Securities. "Markets may grow more volatile ahead of the upcoming earnings season. Investors will look for any indicators of how companies will perform in the fourth quarter," Kim added. Hana Financial Group tumbled 14.41 percent after local media reports South Korea's No.4 banking group was seeking to raise 1 trillion-2 trillion won in a rights offering. Hana Financial later said it was considering a rights offer as part of a capital-raising plan. "Investors are washing their hands of Hana as the possibility of a rights issue is burdensome. A rights offering would certainly dilute share value," said Lim Il-sung, an senior analyst at Meritz Securities. "A share issuance would probably be for investments, namely a mergers and acquisitions. As the industry undergoes restructuring, Hana is seeking ways to remain competitive," Lim added. Korea Exchange Bank <004940.KS> ended flat, outperforming the broader market. Technology issues also retreated amid a stronger won <=KRW>, which stoked concerns about the profitability of technology exporters. "Investors are growing increasingly worried that companies will be negatively affected by strength in the domestic currency," said Seo Do-won, an analyst at Hanwha Securities. "Big gains by tech shares were reflections of bullish earnings prospects and today's share falls are adjustments on lowered expectations," Seo added. Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, the world's No.1 memory chipmaker, lost 5.68 percent and LG Electronics <066570.KS>, the world's No.3 mobile handset maker, fell 5.56 percent. Shipbuilders outperformed following steep recent losses on reports of French shipper CMA CGM's financial troubles, which stoked worries about potential order cancellations. "Shares had clearly been oversold last week on CMA CGM concerns, and we are seeing a technical rebound. We do not think CMA CGM will go as far as completely cancelling orders, although they may delay actual delivery," said Martin Song, an analyst at Woori Investment & Securities. CMA CMG has formed a committee of banks to lead debt talks. [ID:nLU86286] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering <042660.KS> rose 3.05 percent, while STX Offshore & Shipbuilding <067250.KS> gained 1.36 percent, further helped by news it had won orders worth a total of $150 million from units of Europe's Jan Del Nul Group.
