New Haven, CT, United States (AHN) - Prenatal exposure to chemicals found in many items made of plastic may increase an unborn child’s risk of developing breast cancer in adulthood.

Yale University researchers said in a statement that bisphenol-A, or BPA, and diethylstilbestrol, or DES, are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that interfere with proper functioning hormones. Many plastic items, including brands of baby bottles, are made with the chemicals.

The researchers described BPA as a weak estrogen and DES as a strong estrogen. They said that both have a strong effect on gene expression in the breast throughout a woman’s lifetime.

The researchers treated pregnant lab mice with BPA and DES and found that their offspring produced higher levels of a protein associated with the risk of breast cancer in humans.

The study is published in the Endocrine Society’s journal Hormones and Cancer.
