World | France Sarkozy is facing plummeting approval ratings, with voters increasingly worried about growing unemployment and a dim economic outlook as France implements reforms in a bid to reduce its swollen deficit. The Socialists want to capitalize on Sarkozy's problems but must also overcome deep internal divisions that have hampered them in the past. "The candidates will have to make themselves known in June 2011, or around then. But we will have talked amongst ourselves before, I think, to avoid having a plethora of candidates, which would not be good," Martine Aubry said on Sunday on France 2 TV. Aubry, who is mayor of Lille, in northern France, as well as leader of the Socialist Party, is expected to be a candidate. Asked about her plans, she replied: "I was not born thinking I would be a presidential candidate." The Socialist Party, which last won a presidential election in 1988, is planning to choose its candidate through a vote open to left-wing voters and not just party members. International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn is also a potential candidate. A poll earlier this month showed Strauss-Kahn was the clear favorite but he would have to resign from his current position to run.
