1855 GMT: France's second-largest warship, the helicopter carrier Mistral, will reach the Mediterranean on Thursday and stop in Toulon before heading to Libya, escorted by the frigate Georges-Leygues, the defence ministry in Paris says.

The Mistral is scheduled to take part in a European Union-led plan to repatriate Egyptian guest workers flooding out of Libya to escape unrest.

The Mistral and the Georges-Leygues together could carry 800 refugees, a defence ministry spokesman says.

1846 GMT: "The Arab countries cannot remain with their arms folded when the blood of the brotherly Libyan people is being shed," the Arab League says in a resolution after a meeting of foreign ministers in Cairo.

The League in February barred Libya from its meetings until Kadhafi responds to the demands of protesters. League chief Amr Mussa tells the meeting -- attended by foreign ministers and representatives of the 22-member body -- that the situation in Libya was "catastrophic".

1838 GMT: At the United Nations, Chinese president of the Security Council says that no official request for a debate on imposing a no-fly zone over Libya has been presented. However talk of the issue is "floating around in the lobby," says Chinese UN ambassador Li Baodong."Whether we are going to have any action taken by the Security Council really depends on how the situation in Libya is unfolding," Li tells reporters.

1830 GMT: European stock markets fall over concerns relating to instability in the Middle East and North Africa, despite a strong US jobs figure.

"European equity markets are being driven lower by fears of contagion in the Middle East," Dublin-based Dolmen Stockbrokers says in a note. "The region has long been the world's most important oil producer and the recent unrest has underlined the global economy's vulnerability to price shocks."

1824 GMT: British Foreign Secretary William Hague speaks by phone with General Abdel Fatah Yunis, the former Libyan interior minister who defected during the fighting in the northeastern city of Benghazi."They discussed the latest situation on the ground in Libya, the impact on Libyans and the provision of international humanitarian assistance," a Foreign Office spokesman says.

1815 GMT: The Arab League says it would consider backing a no-fly zone over Libya, a move that would prevent Kadhafi from using aircraft to attack rebels or fly in mercenaries from sub-Saharan Africa. The League however rules out support for any direct foreign military intervention.

1759 GMT: Gold, regarded by many investors as a safe haven in times of turmoil, surges to record high prices amid unrest in the Middle East. Gold reaches $1,440.32 per ounce on the London Bullion Market at about 1650 GMT, beating the previous high of $1,434.93 late Tuesday. Silver also soars to the highest level in 30 years, hitting $34.98 an ounce.

1755 GMT: France sends its second-largest warship, the helicopter carrier Mistral, to waters off Libya to help evacuate refugees, the defence ministry says in Paris.

1752 GMT: The United States is a "long way" from deciding whether to impose a no-fly zone in Libya to support a revolt against Kadhafi, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tells US senators in Washington.

In the longer term, US officials worry about Libya descending into chaos and becoming a giant Somalia" where Al-Qaeda or its affiliates could gain a foothold, Clinton tells the senators.

1748 GMT: UNESCO suspends all cooperation with revolt-hit Libya "until the rights of the Libyan people are fully respected," the United Nations cultural organisation says in a statement.

1745 GMT: In the key eastern oil port of Brega, AFP correspondent Samer Al-Atrush reports seeing no visible damage from the clashes outside the university other than bullet casings and heavy machine guns cartridges that litter the street where the Kadhafi militia had been posted.

Rebels fought intense battles to repel Moamer Kadhafi's forces as the regime launched its biggest counter-offensive yet. At least 10 people die in the fighting.

In the square, rebels open fire at a large Kadhafi poster, shouting "It's your turn, it's your turn!" -- meaning the next leader to fall after Zinr El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia and Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.

"Brega is liberated," gun-toting rebel fighter Khalid al-Aqoly tells AFP. "We have forced them to 30 kilometres west."

1739 GMT: As we enter the evening in Libya, here is a recap of the main developments Wednesday:

- In a marathon two-and-a-half hour speech broadcast on state television Moamer Kadhafi warns that "thousands" would die if the West intervenes to support the uprising against him.

-- Two US warships steam through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean towards Libya, as NATO allies remain split on whether to impose a no-fly zone.

-- Rebels in the oil port of Brega fight intense battles with Kadhafi's forces, in clashes which left at least 10 people dead. Fighter jets later fired missiles into the town, but there are no immediate casualties.

-- The UN refugee agency warns of crisis on the Libya-Tunisia border, where it says "acres of people" are waiting to cross in freezing conditions. Food supplies are running short in the cramped camps, with more than 150,000 people having fled into Egypt and Tunisia so far.

Elsewhere in the Middle East:

- In Morocco an advisor to King Mohammed VI announces a range of reforms following regional uprisings.

-- Toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak receives medical treatment for cancer in Saudi Arabia, the state-owned Al-Akhbar newspaper reports.

-- In Saudi Arabia an official tells AFP the Kingdom will soon announce a major cabinet reshuffle, while more than 100 academics, activists and businessmen have been called for major reforms including the establishment of a "constitutional monarchy".
