Apple's Jobs puts on lively iPad 2 show
SAN FRANCISCO - A thin but energetic Steve Jobs made a surprise return to the spotlight on Wednesday, taking the stage to unveil Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> new iPad and drawing a standing ovation. The Silicon Valley legend has been out on medical leave since late January and his reappearance, in trademark turtleneck and jeans, bolstered Apple shares and reassured investors and fans worried about his health.
Timeline: Apple milestones and product launches
NEW YORK - Apple Inc <AAPL.O> unwrapped a sleeker iPad 2 on Wednesday and its maestro Steve Jobs took the stage in San Francisco to a standing ovation after a brief medical absence. Here are some of Apple's milestones:
NY Times expenses to rise, pay wall nearly ready
BANGALORE - The New York Times Co <NYT.N> forecast higher first-quarter expenses and said February print advertising revenue fell, though print ad trends are improving. It also said that its "pay wall" for the nytimes.com website is in its final testing phase and that it would launch shortly.
Barnes & Noble settles lawsuit over Nook feature
NEW YORK - Barnes & Noble Inc <BKS.N> has settled a lawsuit brought against it by Spring Design, which had accused the top U.S. bookseller of illegally copying a screen design for its popular Nook electronic book reader. Under terms of the agreement, Spring is granting Barnes & Noble a non-exclusive license for all of its patents and patent applications. Other terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
HBO Go expands TV and movie programming
NEW YORK - Time Warner Inc's <TWX.N> HBO is making nearly all of its titles available for its HBO Go service, upping the ante in its fight against Netflix. Military to help develop energy storage device
WASHINGTON - The energy-hungry U.S. military plans to help develop advanced power storage devices with the help of a branch of the Energy Department that fosters innovation in high-risk, but high-potential, technologies. NEW YORK - A Verizon Communications <VZ.N> executive hinted at a new version of the iPhone and said Verizon Wireless will replace its unlimited mobile data plans with usage-based pricing around the middle of summer. Yahoo in talks on $8 billion Japan exit: sources
NEW YORK/TOKYO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> is in advanced talks to leave its Japanese joint venture in an effort to sort out its dysfunctional Asian partnerships and free up as much as $8 billion to fight Google <GOOG.O> and Facebook. Morgan Stanley hit by China-based hackers: report
NEW YORK - Morgan Stanley <MS.N> experienced a "very sensitive" break-in to its network by the same China-based hackers who attacked Google Inc's <GOOG.O> computers more than a year ago, Bloomberg reported, citing leaked emails from an Internet security company. The emails from the Sacramento, California-based computer security firm HBGary Inc said that Morgan Stanley -- the first financial institution identified in the series of attacks -- considered details of the intrusion a closely guarded secret, the report said.
