S.Korea disappointed with Asian Cup football draw
DOHA (AFP) - – Australian coach Holger Osieck might have been happy with a draw against South Korea but his counterpart Cho Kwang-Rae wasn't, saying they deserved to win their Asian Cup clash of the titans.
The two football heavyweights, seen as potential tournament champions, played out a high-quality 1-1 draw on Friday evening at Al-Gharafa Stadium, with both sides missing clear-cut chances to grab the winner.
It leaves Group C finely poised, with the Koreans on four points and virtually guaranteed a berth in the quarter-finals with just already-eliminated minnows India to play.
In contrast, the Socceroos need to avoid defeat against a confident Bahrain on Tuesday if they too want to progress.
German Osieck said after the match that he was happy with the result, but Cho considered it two points lost.
"We could have won the game. If you look at the general performance of our team, then we should have won," Cho said.
"It was a great match for the fans to watch and it was a very good show from us, but the result could have been better.
"We controlled the game mostly so in that aspect we have improved a lot. I am pleased about that and if we can continue to develop that part of our game then it will be much better for us as we move forward."
Koo Ja-Cheol put the Koreans in front on 24 minutes after Ji Dong-Won picked up a long ball through the middle and fed it to him, with the exciting 21-year-old making no mistake with a low right-foot shot.
But a second-half equaliser from Mile Jedinak -- his first international goal -- ensured a draw, leaving both teams on four points from two games.
Driven by the dangerous Park Ji-Sung, Korea had plenty of chances to settle the game with Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer pulling off a fine one-handed save from Ki Sung-Yueng four minutes from time to prevent a Korean victory.
Cho was not overly concerned over his team's failure to get more goals, believing that they will get better the further they go in the tournament.
"We have many good players who can score goals. It would be much better if we could score more goals but as we look ahead to the next game, I believe we can be better," he said.
"Players like Park Ji-Sung, Ji Dong-Won and Lee Chung-Yong can score goals for us.
"I don't think the result of this game will affect the team's performance for the game against India. I think my team will play a much better game."
Whoever finishes first in Group C will take on the second-placed team in Group D for a place in the semi-finals, while the second in C plays the first in D -- a tough group that includes Iran, Iraq and North Korea.
Cho said he was not worried about which team they face, when asked if he wanted to avoid Iran, who defeated rivals and holders Iraq in their opening game.
"I don't want to avoid Iran at all," he said.
"We have enough confidence to play against any team in this competition."
