Israel tested worm linked to Iran atom woes: report
WASHINGTON - Israel has tested a computer worm believed to have sabotaged Iran's nuclear centrifuges and slowed its ability to develop an atomic weapon, The New York Times reported on Saturday. In what the Times described as a joint Israeli-U.S. effort to undermine Iran's nuclear ambitions, it said the tests of the destructive Stuxnet worm had occurred over the past two years at the heavily guarded Dimona complex in the Negev desert.
Intel's market sway wanes as it bucks S&P gains
NEW YORK - Intel Corp <INTC.O> doesn't look like the market bellwether it once was. For the third consecutive quarter, shares of the chipmaker are moving in the opposite direction of the Standard & Poor's 500 index a day after it reported earnings.
Groupon, Pandora move on IPOs: sources
NEW YORK - Online coupon site Groupon and Internet radio company Pandora are moving ahead with plans for initial public offerings, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. Chicago-based Groupon is meeting with bankers to explore prospects for an "meaningfully-sized" IPO after a recent bid from Google Inc <GOOG.O> -- reported at $6 billion -- fell apart, one source said.
Goldman's Blankfein pitches for Groupon's IPO: report
NEW YORK - Goldman Sachs <GS.N> Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein went to Chicago to pitch Groupon executives on hiring his bank to underwrite the online coupon company's initial public offering, Bloomberg reported on Friday. The report was attributed to a single unnamed source.
Sprint eyes machine-to-machine benefits in 2 years
DETROIT - Sprint Nextel <S.N> thinks it can make billions of dollars in revenue from wirelessly connecting devices such as in-car safety systems, but does not expect any material gains from doing this for two more years. Sprint is making a "significant investment" in offering machine-to-machine services, which connects everything from electricity meter readers to health care monitors, the company's chief executive, Dan Hesse, said after a Detroit Economic Club event on Friday.
Wikipedia founder sees biggest impact yet to come
LONDON - Wikipedia's impact on the world has yet to peak as the open online encyclopedia aims to double its reach, mainly through expansion in developing countries, founder Jimmy Wales told Reuters. Wikipedia already has about 400 million users and is in the top 10 most popular websites in the world. It aims to reach a billion through international expansion, starting with India, where it plans its first office outside the United States.
Analysis: Investors look to cloud for tech stock picks
BOSTON - Jeffrey Saut simply looks up to remind himself which tech stocks will be hot in 2011. Saut, chief investment strategist for brokerage Raymond James, says he is betting on companies that are leaders in cloud computing -- using Internet technology to move computers and information away from desktops and into remote data centers.
Analysis: Ambition, fear means business tongue-tied on China
BOSTON - U.S. companies want a lot out of Chinese President Hu Jintao when he visits Washington next week. They have a long list of moans and desires. But in a sign of how fearful they are about upsetting Beijing and damaging their access to one of the world's biggest export growth markets, they won't talk about it in public.
News Corp, Apple delay iPad digital newspaper: report
- News Corp <NWSA.O> and Apple Inc <AAPL.O> are delaying the launch of the media conglomerate's digital newspaper for the iPad, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The tablet newspaper, which will be called The Daily, was supposed to be unveiled next Wednesday, but the two parties decided they need more time to test a subscription service, the WSJ said.
Mobile doubts weigh on chipmakers Intel, AMD
SAN FRANCISCO/HELSKINKI - Fears about Intel Corp's <INTC.O> absence in tablets and smartphones are overshadowing the chipmaker's strong earnings and reinforcing the impression that the company no longer sets the direction of the tech industry. The world's largest semiconductor maker has new chips for mobile devices on the way this year and is boosting spending on research and development, but it remains far behind rival ARM Holdings <ARM.L>, whose chip architecture is found in most smartphones and tablets.
