Anthony Jones - AHN Entertainment Reporter
Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) - Hallock Beals is getting his first big break in the movie "The Last Song," where he stars opposite "Hannah Montana" herself, Miley Cyrus. He's had bit parts in shows like "True Blood" and starred in the indie "Godspeed." But in the new Disney drama, the 28-year-old actor plays Scott, best friend to Will, played by on-screen and off-screen Cyrus love interest Liam Hemsworth. He disproves of their relationship (on-screen, of course. On-screen) for reasons unknown until "The Last Song," the first Nicholas Sparks adaptation adapted by Sparks himself, hits theaters on March 30th.
AHN: So I read that you had a Twitter impostor. You've made it. HB: Yes. I knew I had finally become a big deal when somebody was impersonating me on the internet. (Laughing) I have no idea who it was. I accused all my friends and I sat them all down and had a People's Court to try to find out who it was, but since it was a complete stranger, that's a sign that I'm a huge deal.
AHN: And you're from Alaska. HB: Yeah, I was originally born in Alaska but moved to Seattle shortly after. I moved down to Southern California to go to school and then to L.A. thereafter.
AHN: So besides Sarah Palin, that would make you the most famous person from Alaska. HB: (Laughing) I hope to stop her from being the most famous person from Alaska. I think the Alaskans hope that too.
AHN: Tell me about your character Scott. I hear he's a real piece of work. HB: Scott gets a bad rap throughout most of the movie because he's not the most supportive of Ronnie and Will's romance. Nobody really knows why and everybody just think he's a jerk, but it actually comes out that Scott has a secret that he is trying to keep from getting out.
AHN: So did you go back and re-read all of your Nicholas Sparks novels to prepare for your role? HB: I did not. I watched "The Notebook." That is the extent of me getting into Nicholas Sparks mode.
AHN: What was your favorite thing about filming in Savannah, GA? HB: Everything. I love the weather, I love the history. Just being out there with such a talented cast and crew. It'll be a summer I'll never ever forget.
AHN: What was your least favorite thing about filming in Savannah, GA? HB: The storms! My God, they would freak me out. I'm not used to that. I'm from the Northwest where yes it rains but we don't have the winds and thunder and lightning. The first time I got caught in one of those storms, I called my mom back home to check if there was a hurricane warning for Georgia because I thought I was in a hurricane. AHN: Did you have any objections to the bleach blonde they gave you for the movie? HB: We actually had to have a meeting with Adam Shankman about the hair because Liam and I naturally have the same color hair. So they wanted to have a contrast and of course Liam's the big star so he got to keep his hair. Shankman originally wanted to go jet black but he knew that was something I didn't want to do. So it took a few tries but I think they got it right. It was fun being a blonde, volleyball-playing, jerk stud.
AHN: You had a front row seat to the chemistry between Miley and Liam Hemsworth. Is that something you saw blossoming on the set? HB: I lived with Liam for half the shoot but everyone could see it happening before it actually happened. I spent a lot of time with them after shooting, just hanging. It was fun and it was really fun to see their romance grow.
AHN: Did Miley not offer to hook you up with one of her Disney Channel co-stars? Selena Gomez, perhaps? HB: No, actually. Funny story, I started to date Miley's photo double out there. But she doesn't have to hook me up, I could get it myself. (Laughing)
AHN: What was it like working with such a big star like Miley? I'm sure you're in some paparazzi shots unwillingly. Or maybe willingly. HB: I knew that Miley Cyrus was a big deal but I had no idea how big of a deal she was until we got down there. We would drive onto set, we would have to cross barriers of fans that drove from across the country to see her. The paparazzi were tough on Miley when we first got out there but then they left her alone. Either that or she got a little more crafty.
AHN: Here are some "last" questions. What's the last song you listened to? HB: That new B.o.B.song, "Nothin' On You."
AHN: What's the last movie you cried in? HB: "The Blind Side." I didn't think that was something I would cry in but I thought it was great, that story was real inspirational, and Sandra Bullock was amazing.
AHN: When's the last time you watched an episode of "Hannah Montana"? HB: I have never watched an episode of "Hannah Montana." Sorry, Miley.
