Smartphones not enough for carriers at CTIA
NEW YORK - Smartphones may be one of the hottest areas in technology with big names like Apple and Google tussling for share, but investors are questioning the growth prospects for mobile carriers as subscriber gains slow. While it is true that clever devices like the iPhone or Android phones will boost demand for advanced wireless services such as video, games and mobile web, analysts worry that returns from such services cannot sustain revenue growth.

NEW YORK - Whether it's fomenting revolution or telling people what you had for breakfast microblogging service Twitter seems to have it all. Now, New York City's enterprising mobile food vendors are using the instant messaging website to help their hoards of hungry followers stay tuned to their favorite delicacies.
U.S. eyes early summer for airwaves auction process
WASHINGTON - The Federal Communications Commission plans to begin a process in a few months aimed at auctioning airwaves that failed to garner enough interest during the 2008 spectrum auction. The segment, called the D-block, is part of the 700 megahertz band of the airwaves that raised about $19 billion for the U.S. government when other blocks were sold to carriers in 2008. But the D-Block did not sell because carriers did not like some of the conditions for use.

Viacom, Google accuse other of YouTube hypocrisy
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Viacom Inc accused Google Inc of turning a blind eye to illegal video clips on its YouTube site in a bid to attract viewers, according to court documents released on Thursday. Google countered that Viacom managers continued to secretly upload content to YouTube even after the media company had filed the $1 billion copyright suit in March 2007.
Samsung, LG see growth, but know rivals are catching
SEOUL - Technology powerhouses Samsung Electronics <005930.KS> and LG Electronics <066570.KS> reinforced market optimism that strong demand recovery is in place, while cautioning that competition from global rivals is heating up. The comments from Samsung, the world's top maker of LCD flat screens and memory chips and the No.2 mobile phone maker, come as the firm is forecast to report record profit this year, with its key businesses benefiting from an improving global economy.
Somali rebels join forces in cyberspace: U.N. report
NAIROBI - Armed rebel groups in Somalia are using the Internet for fundraising and recruitment, and they achieve better results through the Web than they do on the ground, a United Nations report said. The report by the U.N. Monitoring Group on Somalia also highlighted how the rebels use the Internet to spread information about making bombs and religious rulings.
Google may announce China plans next Monday: report
SHANGHAI - Google Inc <GOOG.O> may make an announcement next Monday about whether it will pull out from China, the China Business News reported on Friday, quoting an unnamed Google employee. The report also said a local authorized agent had received unconfirmed information that Google would leave China on April 10.

Amazon allows Kindle application for Mac computers
SAN FRANCISCO - Online retailer Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> said on Thursday it released an application to allow its Kindle e-books to be read on Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Mac computers. Amazon, maker of the popular Kindle e-reader, is trying to cement its leading position as the top maker of e-readers -- and distributor of e-books -- by making content available on other devices.
