Viacom, Google accuse other of YouTube hypocrisy
NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO - Viacom Inc accused Google Inc of turning a blind eye to illegal video clips on its YouTube site in a bid to attract viewers, according to court documents released on Thursday. Google countered that Viacom managers continued to secretly upload content to YouTube even after the media company had filed the $1 billion copyright suit in March 2007.
Google may announce China plans next Monday: report
SHANGHAI - Google Inc <GOOG.O> may make an announcement next Monday about whether it will pull out from China, the China Business News reported on Friday, quoting an unnamed Google employee. The report also said a local authorized agent had received unconfirmed information that Google would leave China on April 10.
Amazon allows Kindle application for Mac computers
SAN FRANCISCO - Online retailer Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> said on Thursday it released an application to allow its Kindle e-books to be read on Apple Inc <AAPL.O> Mac computers. Amazon, maker of the popular Kindle e-reader, is trying to cement its leading position as the top maker of e-readers -- and distributor of e-books -- by making content available on other devices.
Website's instant posts of Wall Street research banned
NEW YORK - A Manhattan federal judge on Thursday barred the financial news service Theflyonthewall.com from issuing immediate news about analyst research from several Wall Street banks, often before recommendations are shared with clients. Ruling in favor of Bank of America Corp's <BAC.N> Merrill Lynch unit, Barclays Plc <BARC.L> and Morgan Stanley <MS.N>, U.S. District Judge Denise Cote said Theflyonthewall.com engaged in "systematic misappropriation," essentially getting a "free ride" from its quick publication of upgrades and downgrades that can move stocks higher and lower.
Google adword win in Europe wouldn't end battles
SAN FRANCISCO/LONDON - Google Inc <GOOG.O> could win a widely expected victory next week in Europe's top court and still face many more battles over keyword advertising, the backbone of its Internet business model. The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg will rule on Tuesday whether or not Google infringes the trademark rights of such companies as Louis Vuitton through its Adwords service, in which advertisers pay to use keywords that are the companies' proprietary brand names.
FCC plans to announce broadband agenda
WASHINGTON - The Federal Communications Commission plans to announce in coming weeks an agenda of proceedings stemming from the recommendations in the national broadband plan, an agency official said. Phoebe Yang, general counsel of the FCC's broadband task force, said on Wednesday that the FCC will launch more than 40 FCC proceedings -- such as rule-making proposals and notices of inquiry -- in the next year to 18 months.
Apple director Jerry York dies at 71
DETROIT - Jerry York, a long-time adviser to billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian and executive whose career spanned the auto and technology industries, has died, Apple Inc said on Thursday. York, who sat on Apple's board, once worked as chief financial officer at International Business Machines Corp and Chrysler, and served on the board of General Motors.
HTC says confident can defend against Apple suit
NEW YORK - Cellphone developer HTC Corp <2498.TW> said it is confident it can fight off a recent technology patent infringement lawsuit from iPhone maker Apple Inc <AAPL.O> and promised to issue a formal response in the next few weeks. The comments released on Thursday follow a lawsuit from Apple earlier this month, accusing HTC of infringing on 20 iPhone related technology patents. HTC makes phones based on software from Apple's archrivals Google Inc <GOOG.O> and from Microsoft Corp <MSFT.O>.
Creditors want Sex.com in bankruptcy, halt auction
NEW YORK - Creditors of the owner of the Sex.com website have filed an involuntary bankruptcy petition against the company, stalling a lender foreclosure auction for the valuable website that was scheduled to begin on Thursday. Three creditors of Escom LLC, which reportedly paid $14 million for the website's domain name in 2006, filed the bankruptcy petition in U.S. bankruptcy court in California on Wednesday, claiming they are owed more than $10 million.
Kremlin picks site for Russian "Silicon Valley"
MOSCOW - President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday announced that Russia would build a high-tech hub near Moscow to spur modernization of the economy and reduce its dependence on oil and gas. The center, designed to develop five priority sectors -- energy, IT, telecommunications, bio-medical and atomic technologies -- will be built near Skolkovo, a new private-sector business school in the Moscow region.
