Analysts said Seoul shares lacked compelling positives to push the main index comfortably above the psychologically significant 1,700 point level, following a less-than-spectacular set of U.S. economic data and a dull finish for Wall Street stocks. "Samsung Electronics' earnings guidance was strong but market expectations had already been pretty bullish and the numbers came as confirmation rather than a surprise," said Kim Young-june, a market analyst at SK Securities. "The market will eventually reach its previous high. Investors are waiting for more assuring signs of economic improvement in the United States from job and consumption data, and an assurance that the U.S. Federal Reserve would keep its key interest rate steadily low," Kim added. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index <.KS11> was down 0.21 percent at 1,701.71 points as of 0141 GMT, slightly down from the previous 12-month high at 1,723.17 points. Samsung Electronics was down 1.43 percent despite a solid fourth-quarter earnings guidance. Analysts said its relative weakness was due to a recent jump in its share price, which lifted it to an historic high of 841,000 won in the previous session. "We think the memory chip sector will continue to be strong through much of this year, and the liquid crystal display sector will hold through the first quarter," said Park Young-joo, an analyst at Woori Investment & Securities. Samsung Electronics said early on Thursday that it expected profit for the October-December quarter to come in higher than market forecasts, helped by strong memory chip prices and robust demand for flat-screen televisions. [ID:nTOE604085] LG Electronics, the world's No.3 cell phone maker, was down 5 percent after news that Google Inc <GOOG.O> had launched a new smartphone that it would sell directly to consumers. [ID:nN04199072] "LG Electronics' smart phone business is not exactly doing well, so Google's smart phone comes as serious competition," said Yoo Jong-woo, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities. Carmakers continued to decline amid the won currency's <KRW=> continued strength, fueling concern about price competitiveness overseas. Hyundai Motor <005380.KS>, South Korea's top carmaker, was down 2.25 percent. Kia Motors <000270.KS>, South Korea's No.2, retreated 1.76 percent.
