Hulu cuts subscription fee as "Plus" service launches
NEW YORK - Internet video company Hulu slashed the price of its subscription service Hulu Plus, which made its official debut on Wednesday. Hulu knocked down the monthly cost to $7.99 from the preview price of $9.99. Users who subscribed to the preview service, which was available in June, will receive a credit for the price difference, the company said.
Google, Hachette ink accord on book scanning
PARIS - Google has signed an accord with France's biggest book publisher Hachette Livre on the scanning and sale of out-of-print books, which grants the publisher wide control over pricing and content. The deal, announced on Wednesday, covers some 50,000 French language titles, including literature, academic works and reference books, and is unlikely to generate huge revenue for Hachette parent company Lagardere.
China telecom briefly hijacked U.S. Web traffic: panel
WASHINGTON - China Telecom <0728.HK> sent incorrect routing information last April that resulted in Internet traffic to major corporate websites and U.S. military and government sites being sent through China for 18 minutes, according to a report by a congressional advisory group. The incident was one of several discussed by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission. Reuters obtained a copy of the draft report, which will formally be released on Wednesday.
Twitter considers raising over $100 million: report
SAN FRANCISCO - Microblogging service Twitter is considering raising funding that would value the company at $3 billion, according to a popular technology blog. Russian technology investment firm DST Global is seeking to lead the funding round, which would be larger than the $100 million that Twitter raised in September 2009, according to a report on Wednesday on the blog TechCrunch. The report said that other investors are also eager to be involved.
HP hopes to reassure Street, Dell's margins key
SAN FRANCISCO - Hewlett Packard Co <HPQ.N> hopes to shift investors' attention from its internal upheaval to financial performance, with an imminent quarterly report expected to again showcase its reputation for solid -- if unspectacular -- growth. HP shares have suffered after months of grappling with the messy exit of Mark Hurd as chief executive, followed by a nasty public fight with Oracle Corp <ORCL.O> and its CEO Larry Ellison over the hiring of Silicon Valley outsider Leo Apotheker as its new chief.
Amazon launches film production website
NEW YORK - Amazon.com Inc <AMZN.O> is making a foray into film production with a new website that allows would-be filmmakers to submit scripts and movies that could land on the silver screen. Amazon Studios, in a partnership with Time Warner Inc's <TWX.N> Warner Bros on Wednesday, is offering almost $3 million for "top submissions" of scripts and test movies received by December 31, 2011 and plans to develop the projects as commercial feature films.
Innovations move amusement parks into digital age
ORLANDO, Florida - The last time you visited an amusement park, did you stand in line for a popular ride? Pull soggy dollars out of your swimming trunks to buy a burger? Send photos to your friends when you got home? That's all so yesterday, according to vendors at this week's amusement industry expo in Orlando who are launching new devices and apps to bring the park experience into the personal digital age.
Online holiday sales growth seen doubling
SAN FRANCISCO - Online spending this holiday season, driven by hard-to-resist deals, is expected to grow by at least 9 percent, twice last year's pace, analytics firm comScore said on Tuesday. The influential research house told Reuters it raised its forecast for spending during November and December from a previous forecast of 7 to 9 percent growth after tracking continued strength in consumer-spending growth rates throughout October.
India, RIM move closer to deal on corporate email: report
NEW DELHI - India and Research In Motion <RIM.TO> have moved closer to an agreement on lawful access and monitoring of the highly-secure corporate email services on BlackBerry devices, the Mint newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing an unnamed interior ministry official. The paper said a series of meetings took place last week between RIM executives and officials from the Indian interior ministry and intelligence agency.
Russia's tech hub signs deal with Nokia, eyes Intel
MOSCOW - Intel Corp <INTC.O> may join a growing number of the world's biggest technology firms in backing Russia's Silicon Valley-style technology hub. Skolkovo, launched earlier this year as part of President Dmitry Medvedev's drive to modernize the oil and gas-dependent Russian economy, on Wednesday signed an agreement with Nokia <NOK1V.HE>, the world's biggest handset maker.
