Lisa Murkowski celebrated victory in her re-election bid Wednesday night, becoming the first Senate write-in candidate to win in more than five decades. Republican candidate Joe Miller wants to review voting tapes and may seek a recount. Exactly a week after the counting of write-in and absentee ballots began, Murkowski thanked supporters in a speech that paid tribute to her mentor, the late Ted Stevens. The senator launched her write-in campaign after losing unexpectedly to Miller in the Republican primary in August. Like most incumbents with the official support of the GOP, she lost to a Tea Party conservative in a year filled with anti-Washington sentiment. The final tally of write-in ballots has Murkowski with 92,715 votes. Miller has challenged more than 10,000 ballots, about 2,000 of which were not counted. The validity of all challenged ballots will be determined by a court, following Miller's lawsuit last week arguing that ballots with misspellings of Murkowski's name should be excluded regardless of "voter intent." Miller has 90,740 votes from precincts and 20 from write-in ballots. Election officials have allowed him to review precinct logs. A former Fairbanks judge who was forced just before election day to admit to ethics violations when he was a government lawyer, Miller is still pushing to get access to voting machine tapes. "After all the absentee ballots are in and we’ve further reviewed the procedures and the results, we may ask for a recount," Miller said on Wednesday. "Less than 1 percent of the vote now separates my and Lisa Murkowski’s total. If there is a recount and a consistent standard is applied to all the ballots, who knows what the difference would be." The Alaska Republican Party has called the race for Murkowski, a moderate who was appointed to the Senate in 2002 by her father, and asked Miller to concede. "At this point we are comfortable calling this race,” state GOP chair Randy Ruedrich said. "This was a free and fair election. It is now time to look forward. We call on Joe Miller to respect the will of the voters and end his campaign in a dignified manner." The race in Alaska is the last undecided Senate race. It will not significantly affect the makeup of the Senate, which remains controlled by a weaker Democratic majority under Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV).
