Park, Jiao target more glory as China hits 100th Asiad gold

GUANGZHOU, China (AFP) - – Park Tae-Hwan and Jiao Liuyang look to cap a hugely successful Asian Games Thursday with their fourth gold medals as the world's top badminton stars launched their title battle.
China rammed home its dominance on Day 6 by hitting the 100 gold medal milestone when they won the women's lightweight double sculls rowing title.
The hosts rowing team went on to claim another five titles, with Japan the only non-Chinese winner in the final event of the day, the men's lightweight four.
The sporting powerhouse has now reached the magic number in each of the last six Asian Games and has its sights set on its own record of 183 gold posted at the 1990 Asiad in Beijing.
South Korea is a long way behind on 32 gold to Japan's 18 with North Korea and Iran next best on five, illustrating the huge gulf between the big three and the rest of the 45 nations and territories taking part.
South Korean superstar Park is targeting a fourth freestyle gold in the men's 1,500 metres while China's Jiao is eyeing a butterfly clean sweep.
Park, who has won the 100 metres, 200m and 400m in a devastating display of power, will go head to head with his fierce rival Zhang Lin, whom he beat to 400m gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in his evening race.
On the last night of action in the pool, he will also come up against China's Sun Yang, ranked number one in the world in the 1,500m freestyle, and who took silver behind Park in the 400m on Tuesday.
"My coach told me that compared to Sun Yang and Zhang Lin in the 1,500 freestyle, there is still a gap between my time, so I could fall behind," said Park of his least dominant race. "I have to work harder."
On the badminton courts, the world's top shuttler Lee Chong Wei got his bid for singles gold underway with a tough 17-21, 21-9, 21-6 win over Hong Kong's Chan Yan-Kit.
"I rushed myself in the first set and I got into form a little late," said the Malaysian who has been struggling with injury.
"I had a headache in the men's team match and I have injured my waist, but I won't think about it. I just want to keep playing and do well."
Indonesian defending champion Taufik Hidayat romped past Sri Lankan Dinuka Karunaratna 21-14, 21-9, while arch-rival, Chinese superstar Lin Dan, thrashed Hong Kong's Hu Yun 21-6, 21-13.
The Beijing Olympics and three-time world champion, who led the formidable Chinese men to team gold, has been trying to play down expectations that he will win the singles titles as well.
"I think a team title gave me enough satisfaction at these Asian Games," said Lin.
Table tennis is also into the business end of the tournament with the men's top four seeds, China's Ma Long and Wang Hao, South Korea's Joo Sae-hyuk and Japan's Jun Mizutani all gunning for semi-final berths.
Singapore's Feng Tianwei is the top seed among the women and she breezed through with a 4-0 hammering of Mueena Mohamed of the Maldives.
India's Sania Mirza, meanwhile, brushed aside Hong Kong's Chan Wing Yau 6-1, 6-0 in under an hour in the women's tennis singles and now tackles China's Zhang Shuai for a place in the last eight.
Mirza, whose world ranking has slumped to 166 after a series of injuries, skipped the team event won by the Li Na-led China after complaining of a sore throat and ear infection.
