Ice Jams Flood Michigan Town, Residents Evacuated From 38 Homes By Boat
February 14, 2009 7:02 a.m. EST

East China Township, MI (AHN) - Flooding caused by ice jams on the Belle River forced evacuations of residents by boat Friday morning from dozens of homes in St. Clair County, MI, 40 miles northeast of Detroit.
Marine City firefighters evacuated residents from 38 homes in a small subdivision in East China Township after rising flood waters covered roads overnight. Flooding also cut off electricity and gas to the homes.
Some motorists also had to be rescued from their vehicles.
The county's director of homeland security said the flooding was caused by ice jams at a Marine City bridge. His teams worked on breaking through those jams and did so later Friday.
Officials said it was the worse flooding they had there in 30 years.
