Well, you've got to give her credit. Literally. Why? Because she's sure not paying cash. Hey, c'mon, she's only maxed out a dozen credit cards.
She's Rebecca Bloomwood, the hard-charging protagonist of the romantic consumerist comedy, Confessions of a Shopaholic.
Played by Isla Fisher, Rebecca is a beginning journalist in New York City who's hopelessly addicted to shopping and, not by coincidence, drowning in a sea of debt. Yep, a screwball comedy showcasing fiscal irresponsibility. Talk about bad timing.
"A man will never love you or treat you as well as a store," she tells us in early voiceover. Yep, this is a retail tale if ever there were one.
Rebecca works as a writer for a financial magazine, a job that bores her silly. Nor does it pay her nearly enough to sustain her addiction to shopping. What she wishes she could do is write for a top fashion magazine, but she can't seem to get her foot in that door.
Because she can't keep up with the bills she keeps piling up, she moves in with her best friend and tries to cut back on her expenses. To no avail. Then she tries to increase her income. Nice try, but no cigar.
Then, as if by magic, she's offered a slot as an advice columnist, writing about sensible spending for a new financial mag called Successful Saving -- under the psuedonym, "The Girl in the Green Scarf" -- that's published by the parent company, with Hugh Dancy as her editor and the love interest she's about to fall for.
Overnight, it seems, her column catches the public's fancy and she becomes a media sensation and an instant celebrity.
But her compulsive shopping continues. Could Shopaholics Anonymous be far behind? Nope, it couldn't.
Based on the first two books in a series by British author Sophie Kinsella, "Confessions of a Shopaholic" (2000) and "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan" (2001) -- but transplanted from London to New York -- the film features a screenplay by Tracey Jackson, Tim Firth, and Kayla Alpert that celebrates designer-label consumerism in a way that is so unapologetic, it seems patently offensive in these troubled economic times.
That the film was planned and scripted before the recession kicked in so devastatingly doesn't change the way that everything in this alleged condemnation of rampant spending looks and sounds to the eyes and ears of a 2009 audience: that is, like an enthusiastic celebration of same. The two-faced film may end up preaching to live within our means, but it sure does parade all those product-placement goodies before us as if expecting us to drool and reach for our plastic.
Hmmm, we sit there thinking, maybe this is why we're all in the fix we're in.
The able supporting cast includes Joan Cusack and John Goodman as Rebecca's parents, as well as John Lithgow, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Lynn Redgrave. Pity that none of them gets to emerge as a three-dimensional character, given the frenetic editing style and rhythm employed by Australian director P. J. Hogan (My Best Friend's Wedding, Peter Pan, Muriel's Wedding), who either encourages or allows ensemble overacting throughout.
Even Fisher, who was so funny in Wedding Crashers and so winsome in Definitely, Maybe, misses out on being either in this caffeinated, overzealous romp.
The few times that we get a glimpse of what might have been are in the limited playful scenes in which store mannequins come to life, either beckoning Rebecca or congratulasting her on her newfound restraint.
But it's too little and too late to make us believe any of what we're watching: the authenticity police were apparently off-duty throughout production.
Confessions of a Shopaholic, an out-of-touch and already-outdated cautionary comedy, is a snapshot of what helped get us into the economic crisic we're in. It may be about shopping, but we're not buying any of it.
