"Winter's Bone," "Kids" come up big at Spirit Awards
LOS ANGELES - Drama "Winter's Bone" and comedy "The Kids Are All Right" came up big at the Independent Spirit Award nominations on Tuesday earning nods in several categories including best film for the key movie awards. "Winter's Bone," a dark drama about a girl searching for her father in a drug-infested community in rural Arkansas, earned seven nominations, including for director Debra Granik and star Jennifer Lawrence, who earned a nod for best actress.
Michael Douglas eyes Liberace after chemotherapy
NEW YORK - Cancer-stricken Michael Douglas is already looking toward his next film role playing iconic pianist Liberace after recently completing chemotherapy treatment for throat cancer. The 66-year-old actor told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published on Tuesday that he's just happy to be talking after a year of "adversity," including discovering he had stage four throat cancer, his son Cameron being sentenced to prison on drug charges, and his ex-wife suing him for earnings from the "Wall Street" sequel.
"Winter's Bone" wins best film at Gotham Awards
NEW YORK - "Winter's Bone," a stark tale of a young woman trying to keep her family together, won best feature film on Monday night at the Gotham Awards, a key event for independent movies. The film revolves around a small group of people living in the rural mountains of southern Missouri who are involved in making a form of crystal methamphetamine, commonly called "crank." It also won best ensemble performance at the New York-based awards.1
James Franco, Anne Hathaway to co-host Oscars
LOS ANGELES - Actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway have been named co-hosts of the film industry's upcoming Academy Awards, Oscar organizers said on Monday. The pair are currently starring in two movies that some experts believe could earn them nominations for one of the world's top movie honors when they are given out on February 27.
Filmmaker Zucker pays tribute to Leslie Nielsen
LOS ANGELES - It was summer 1979, a full three weeks before the start of shooting for Airplane! and our casting director had finally had enough. Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Peter Graves and now Leslie ... who? At least audiences had heard of the first three, but this guy -- it was true, when it came time to select an actor to play Dr. Rumack, my brother Jerry, Jim Abrahams and I remembered: "This one guy, he's been in hundreds of television shows, and I think he played the captain of the Poseidon. What's his name ...?"
"Tangled" shines light on Disney Animation rivals
LOS ANGELES - To damn with faint praise: The opening box office for "Tangled" during the holiday-stretched weekend represented the best for any non-Pixar animated release by Disney in years. For though undeniably strong, the $68.7 million rung up by the Disney-branded movie during its first five days also serves to underscore some internecine rivalry among the studio's movie animators. And unless "Tangled" continues to outpace expectations during the length of its theatrical run, its Burbank animators will continue to struggle with the knotty problem of competing with their corporate kin at Pixar.
Madonna turns hand to fitness with gym launch
MEXICO CITY compound where Mexico's rich and the beautiful can go through dance classes and fitness routines inspired by the singer's routines.
Defiant Dr. Laura targets foes in new radio show
LOS ANGELES - One of the first subjects Laura Schlessinger will tackle in depth on her new Sirius XM Radio talk show in the new year is the one that nearly derailed her. In confirming the exclusive arrangement to bring her talk show to satellite radio beginning Jan, 3, Schlessinger said Monday she intends to introduce roundtable discussions. Within the first three weeks one topic will be race relations and free speech.
"Spider-Man" Broadway preview stuck in mid-air
NEW YORK - "Spider-Man," Broadway's most expensive show ever, caught audiences by surprise in its first preview performance on Sunday night when its high-tech flying sequences became stuck, leaving its stars suspended mid-air. The $65 million "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," with music created by U2's Bono and The Edge, was stopped at least five times, including while actors were flying above the crowd at the show's preview, The New York Times and others reported on Monday.
Electrician stuns art world with trove of Picassos
PARIS - Pablo Picasso was both hugely prolific and famously generous with his work, but was he enough of a free spirit to give hundreds of his early works -- an invaluable collection -- to his electrician? That question lies at the heart of a court case over the origin of 271 Picasso works -- a treasure trove of original sketches, paintings and collages that was unknown to the art world a few months ago and unveiled for the public on Monday.
