Nikkei falls on profit-taking after hitting 10,000

 AP - Monday, June 15
TOKYO - Japanese stocks declined moderately Monday on some profit-taking after the benchmark index broke above the symbolically important 10,000 points last week for the first time in eight months.

The Nikkei 225 stock average lost 96.15 points, or 0.95 percent, to 10,039.67. On Friday, the index finished above 10,000 for the first time since October 7, 2008.
Investors have grown gradually more hopeful for a global recovery, but they remained cautious about how definitive the upturn may be.
"Hitting the 10,000 mark was one key step, and so some people are going to want to sell at that point, while others are going to want to buy," said Yutaka Miura, senior strategist at Mizuho Securities Co. in Tokyo.
But he said worries remained that overseas stock markets would decline in coming sessions, and that the Tokyo benchmark was likely to hover around the 10,000 level for some time.
Over the weekend, finance ministers from the Group of Eight industrialized nations, meeting in Italy, acknowledged "signs of stabilization in our economies." But they also said it was still too early to shift strategies because the fallout from the crisis wasn't over.
Investors were also awaiting the release of U.S. housing and other data later in the week for more signs of an economic recovery in the U.S. economy, a vital export market.
The dollar was trading at 98.44 yen midafternoon, adding to a rally from last week that lifted it to 98.24 yen late Friday in New York.
