Google hires, but Yahoo fires
SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> is planning its second round of layoffs in six weeks, while rival Google Inc <GOOG.O> is preparing its biggest-ever year for hiring, underscoring the divergent paths of two of the Internet's biggest names. Yahoo said on Tuesday it will cut 1 percent of a global workforce that stood at about 14,100 at the end of the third quarter, just weeks after announcing it would lay off about 4 percent, or roughly 600 people, from its workforce.
Twitter site blocked in Egypt: Harvard's Herdict
SAN FRANCISCO - Egyptians say the Twitter Web site is blocked on all Internet Service Providers in their country, a representative of Harvard University's Herdict Web monitoring service told Reuters on Tuesday. But Twitter users within Egypt are currently sending Tweets, short 140-character messages, via SMS text messages and through third-party applications, the center said as thousands of Egyptians took to the streets to protest President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule.
Murdoch iPad newspaper to launch in next two weeks
MUNICH, Germany - News Corp's <NWSA.O> new digital newspaper The Daily, designed for Apple's <AAPL.O> iPad, should launch in the next two weeks after some delays and will cost $0.99 per week, executive James Murdoch said on Tuesday. The digital-only publication, available initially only in the United States, represents News Corp's latest attempt to force consumers to pay for its online news and support investment in journalism -- a strategy that is being closely watched.
Eric Schmidt expects another 10 years at Google
MUNICH, Germany - Google's <GOOG.O> Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said he expected to spend another 10 years at the company, after his surprise handover last week to co-founder Larry Page. Schmidt, who from April will focus on deals and government outreach as executive chairman, also said the group would hire thousands of people this year, rejecting accusations that it has struggled to keep its best talent from leaving for Facebook and other Silicon Valley rivals.
Online paid news service launched for big papers
NEW YORK - A personalized news service funded by New York Times Co <NYT.N>., Washington Post Co <WPO.N>., and Gannett Co <GCI.N> launched on Tuesday in an attempt to get readers to pay for online news. Ongo, which received $12 million in funding from the three newspaper publishers, delivers news from a variety of sources starting at $7 a month.
Ericsson sees strong 2011 as data traffic explodes
STOCKHOLM - Ericsson <ERICb.ST> forecast strong demand for mobile broadband equipment in 2011 after a surge in fourth-quarter sales on the back of consumer demand for smartphones boosted growth for the first time in two years. Shares in the world's biggest mobile network gear maker rose 4 percent to their highest level since September 2010 as sales topped all expectations.
Security apps boost Apple as BlackBerry alternative
TORONTO/SAN FRANCISCO - A slew of small security software developers are helping Apple's <AAPL.O> iPhone gain a foothold within corporations that were once the exclusive domain of Research In Motion's <RIM.TO> BlackBerry. The shift reflects efforts by some companies to accommodate the preference of many employees for Apple's iconic smartphone, a trend that has led software makers to develop programs to deliver secure email and other data over the iPhone.
Microsoft and RIM grow on app developers: survey
TORONTO - Mobile software developers remain fixated on Apple <AAPL.O> and on Google's <GOOG.O> Android as the prime targets of their toil, but Microsoft <MSFT.O> and Research In Motion <RIM.TO> are making inroads as tablet offerings multiply. The iPhone, which boasts more than 300,000 third-party applications, or apps, retains the attention of 92 percent of developers, according to a survey released on Tuesday by research firm IDC and app platform Appcelerator.
Groupon CEO says exploring IPO; no decision
MUNICH, Germany - Daily deals website Groupon is considering an initial public offering and is in talks with bankers, founder and Chief Executive Andrew Mason told Reuters on Monday. "We've met with a bunch of bankers, we're exploring whether or not it makes sense for us but we haven't made a decision. We're still in the learning phase," Mason said in an interview at the DLD media conference in Munich.
Verizon sees 2011 EPS, revenue up as much as 8 percent
NEW YORK - Verizon Communications <VZ.N> expects revenue to rise as much as 8 percent this year as customers rush to buy more smartphones, particularly Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> iPhone. Verizon, whose shares climbed more than 2 percent following the better-than-expected outlook, will begin selling iPhone next month through its Verizon Wireless venture, bringing an end to AT&T Inc's <T.N> exclusive hold on the wildly popular phone.
