Bruno opens Amsterdam "pink light" brothel
ADVERTISEMENT
AMSTERDAM - British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, in his latest incarnation as a gay Austrian fashion reporter, jet skied through a canal into Amsterdam's red light district on Friday to open a brothel full of men in thongs ahead of the Dutch premiere of 'Bruno'. "For too long, guys coming here from around the world have been forced to have sex with women," Cohen said, standing in front of a pink-lit brothel building in the Dutch capital as surprised tourists and stag party goers looked on.
"Twilight" star Pattinson hit by taxi as flees fans
NEW YORK - "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson was hit by a taxi in New York as he tried to run away from a crowd of hysterical teenage fans, but he was not seriously injured, U.S. media reported. Pattinson, 23, who stars in the hit teenage vampire movies, was clipped on the hip in front a bookstore in Manhattan where he was shooting scenes on Thursday for his new film, "Remember Me," a drama about two young lovers dealing with family tragedies.
Eco-activist rock musician thinks local, acts global
NEW YORK - It's a long way from rock and roll to eco-activist but Chuck Leavell, most recently keyboardist for The Rolling Stones, believes the two are anything but mutually exclusive. Leavell, 57, said while the 60's are best known for the music and sexual revolutions, in a smaller but equally important way there was greater recognition that people had to start taking care of the environment.
Katherine Heigl returning to "Grey's Anatomy"
LOS ANGELES - It has been a real-life cliffhanger bigger than the one faced by her character Izzie in the season finale of "Grey's Anatomy": Will co-star Katherine Heigl return to "Grey's" next season? Sources have said that Heigl's option on the medical drama has been picked up, meaning that she will continue on the show.
Cher struggles, but supports child's sex change
LOS ANGELES - Cher has struggled to understand her child's decision to have a sex change operation but remains supportive and respectful of the courage it takes, the pop star said in a statement on Thursday. Formerly Chastity Bono, the 40-year-old is the child of Cher and Sonny Bono and now goes by the name Chaz Bono. Chaz has begun operations and hormone treatments to become a man.
Israel honors German soldier from "The Pianist"
BERLIN - A German army officer who helped Jews during World War Two and was featured in the Oscar-winning film "The Pianist" was posthumously honored by Israel at a ceremony in Berlin on Friday. The story of how Captain Wilhelm Hosenfeld saved the life of Jewish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman received worldwide attention through Roman Polanski's 2002 film, which won three Academy Awards and many other prizes worldwide.
Frank Lloyd Wright's famed Ennis House to be sold
NEW YORK - Frank Lloyd Wright's famed, long-endangered Ennis House, which served as a location for films such as "Blade Runner," is putting out a "for sale" sign with a $15 million asking price, Christie's said on Friday. The 6,000-square-foot Los Angeles estate is being sold by the Ennis House Foundation, which recently completed the initial phase of a stabilization and restoration project after years of decay and damage from earthquakes and torrential rains. In March 2005, it was placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's most-endangered list.
Old Hound Dogs Leiber & Stoller up to new tricks
LOS ANGELES - If Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller had not become two of the most influential songwriters in pop music, they could have earned a decent living as a stand-up comedy duo. Almost 60 years after an awkward first meeting that set them on the road to vast fame and fortune through such tunes as "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Stand By Me" and "Poison Ivy," the pair have developed a finely honed routine.
Jolie, Pitt give $1 million for Pakistan refugees
LOS ANGELES - Celebrity couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt donated $1 million to a U.N. refugee agency to help Pakistanis displaced by fighting between troops and Taliban militants, the agency said on Thursday. Jolie, the star of 2008 movies "Changeling" and "Wanted," has visited Pakistan three times to witness United Nations relief operations since becoming a "goodwill ambassador" for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001.
Just a Minute With: Sandra Bullock's "Proposal"
NEW YORK - Actress Sandra Bullock says romantic comedies are bad and she is fighting against her latest movie, "The Proposal," being put in that category. In "The Proposal," which will be released in U.S. theaters on Friday, Bullock plays a Canadian book editor who declares she is engaged to her unsuspecting assistant, played by Ryan Reynolds, to avoid deportation from the United States.
