ADVERTISEMENT The Wallabies surprised the Springboks on Saturday by scoring an early try in a frenetic start to the contest and also provided staunch resistance when they had two men yellow carded near half-time. With fly-half Matt Giteau and flanker Richard Brown spending time in the sin-bin, South Africa had the chance to close out the match but some wise play either side of the break kept Australia in the match. "They played incredibly clever rugby when they were two players short," reflected Smit. "Before half-time, which was a crucial stage of the match, they were accurate. They had to work through the handicap as well as cope with the pressure that we tried to apply." Smit played a crucial role in the Springbok fightback, unlocking the Australian defence with a cheeky grubber that saw lock Victor Matfield score the home side's only try, and was understandably pleased with his effort. "I had no option but to do it," the skipper joked of the kick. "I didn't have the option of a drop kick but I can grubber." The tighthead prop also said his side's victory was the result of continued pressure on Australia throughout the match. "The manner we play is discipline-based and it's something that we pride ourselves on. We take pride in being accurate at the breakdown," Smit insisted. "We put concerted effort into the breakdown situations and the pressure becomes so much that a team steps over the line (of legal play)." Coach Peter de Villiers was equally impressed with Australia's resistance, but paid tribute to the continued progress made by the Springboks, who now have three wins from three home fixtures in the southern hemisphere competition. "When they were two yellows cards down they played bravely," he said of the Wallabies. "They did well by not allowing us to play. "As a coach you can never be satisfied, and you'll always go for better. It's working well (for South Africa) at the moment, it's brilliant. "I've said it before: this team has come a long way and you would have seen it on the field today. "The players read the situations very well, we are kind of where we want to be." South Africa have 12 points and New Zealand four from three matches and Australia one from two ahead of the next fixture on August 22 between the Wallabies and All Blacks in Sydney.
