President Barack Obama waves to the audience as he arrives to speak at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta November 10, 2010. Obama was given a rock star's welcome at one of Indonesia's biggest universities on Wednesday, where he charmed an audience with speech laced with local lingo and a message of reform.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Wednesday much more needs to be done to repair frayed U.S. relations with the Muslim world in an acknowledgement of the difficulties in eradicating "years of mistrust."
In a speech highlighting a nostalgic visit to Indonesia, where he spent four years as a young boy, Obama spoke fondly of his formative years in the world's most populous Muslim country.
"Indonesia is a part of me," said Obama, who left around 10:45 a.m. (10:45 p.m. ET) for the G20 summit in South Korea, the next stop on a 10-day Asia tour.
His speech was an update to a major address he gave 17 months ago in Cairo where he declared a "new beginning" in U.S.-Muslim relations after the tensions over the September 11, 2001, attacks and the Bush government's response to them.
Since his Cairo address, irritants remain on both sides. Al Qaeda still seeks to attack its Western enemies. Little progress has been made in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian dispute and U.S. troops are still in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Confidence in Obama has dropped in many Muslim nations as a result.
"In the 17 months that have passed we have made some progress, but much more work remains to be done," Obama said.
Obama said "no single speech can eradicate years of mistrust" but he promised, "No matter what setbacks may come, the United States is committed to human progress. That is who we are. That is what we have done. That is what we will do."
On the Middle East specifically, Obama said the Israeli-Palestinian peace process faces "enormous obstacles" after he relaunched talks in September only to see the dialogue bogged down over disputes between the parties.
"But let there be no doubt: we will spare no effort in working for the outcome that is just, and that is in the interest of all the parties involved: two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security."
POWERFUL EXAMPLE
Obama was being forced to cut short his twice-postponed visit to Indonesia by concern that an ash cloud from the deadly Mount Merapi volcano would prevent Air Force One from taking off in time to attend the G20 summit in Seoul.
But his curtailed schedule still allowed time for a visit to Jakarta's national Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in southeast Asia, and his speech at the University of Indonesia.
Speaking to a crowd of thousand that cheered him like a rock star, Obama said Indonesia served as a powerful example as an emerging democracy working to develop its economy and a Muslim nation that is tolerant of other religions.
"Your achievements demonstrate that democracy and development reinforce one another," he said.

Closer ties? To what end? Is anyone sleeping more soundly and feeling safer and less harassed by your government since he’s been “president”? Not I, nor anyone I know.

Communication is a 2-way street.
Why does Obama always slam Christians?
When does Obama tell Muslims they need to reach out to Christians?
Why is America always pushed to “reach out” to others.
It is time for others to reach out to Americans.
They need to reach out with peace and not bombs and kidnappings

There is no need to “reach out” to Buddhists because they never try to fly airplanes into buildings, blow-up planes with liquid explosives or clothing bombs, or explode bombs on trains or busses. Only Muslims try it.
No, Obama, we do not need to reach out to Muslims. They need to reach out to us with olive branches and other symbols of true peace. They need to stop oppressing women and all religions other than Islam. They must accept that residents of Western countries have the right to criticize politicians, celebrities, and religious leaders. When they do this, we will accept them, but not before.

Obama feels right at home in Indonesia and he should stay there. He speaks to the students in their language very clearly better than he speaks to Americans. He reaches out to them and kicks us in the can. I wonder if he will take his next vacation there.

Yes the muslims commuity needs to work harder to improve ties with the rest of the world… not the other way around!!
They have decades of work to begin to repair problems they have created in the world – they should get started.

The Bible tells us in Matthew 7:1, “Do not judge or you too will be judged” (NIV).
There is a high level of diversity in the United States. Our society is based on respect for diversity. Stereotype and assumptions that all Muslims are somehow suspects does not help. The very actions of a few radical fringe does not constitute that of a community.

Have been searching the Internet now for months….. can’t find ONE example of even ONE leader of the Muslim world that has publicly stated they need to reach out to us. Not one. If anyone out there can provide a link that proves otherwise, please do so. Barack Hussein is on another fools journey if he thinks reconciliation isn’t a TWO-WAY street.

He sure is not doing his image any favors among his detractors… He should feel right at home in Kenya, too…
@ kaosu. Aren’t you and Obama inherently stereotypically multiple nations by calling them “Muslims?” How do I identify a Muslim so I can improve my ties?
Obama should refer to *Islamic nations,* if that is really what he intends. America was founded on freedom of religion and people are free to build their church or mosque wherever they please. Could the same be said for all Islamic countries? It is the extremist that falsley believe our tolerant country is somehow the enemy that need to be dealt with by their countrymen. The fact that they are letting these terrorists fester is the problem America has with Islamic nations.

Wars start because people isolate other nations or groups. When you don’t communicate and seek out your common interests and desires, then you have no basis to form peace on. All these idiots who say “Don’t reach out to Muslims” are part of the problem; part of the reason why radical Muslims find so many sympathetic ears, and those that say “The Muslims should reach out to *us*” aren’t paying attention to the world. Muslim nations have been reaching out to America for nearly 2 decades.
First and foremost, get your heads out of your arses and learn the difference between Extremists (a tiny, tiny minority that is unrepresentative of the group) and Moderates (the vast majority that doesn’t want anything to do with suicide bombs, Jidhads or Fatahs). There’s a huge difference, and so long as you judge Muslims by the actions of the Extremists, you’re proving yourselves to be utter fools.
Second of all, the Muslim majority has suffered more at the hands of those Extremists than any American ever has, and then losers like you guys come along and kick them when they’re down.
Thirdly, the “Christian” Religion is not immune to Extremism, nor to Terrorism. There have been many Christian Terrorists; we’re just hypocrites and don’t call them that. We call them Serial Killers and Cult Leaders, or occasionally, Radical Preachers, but they have much more in common with Islamic Extremists than they have in common with Christians.
Fourthly, the friendly Islamic nations are not letting terrorists “fester”; they are doing absolutely everything in their power to ferret out those criminals to their nation as well as to America. But the reason why they’re having so much trouble dealing with them is the same reason why American can’t put radical Christian extremists like Fred Phelps and Pat Robertson in jail; they have the right to free speech; it is illegal to repress them. If America can’t “deal with” it’s own terrorist-creating clerics, then how do you expect countries with even fewer resources than America to deal with theirs?
Finally, I have to admit that the Obama critics on this thread have at least surprised me positively in one way; they weren’t slimy enough to let Obama’s trip to Indonesia start up another round of silly Birther Nonsense.
