Wallaby reserves tame English rugby champs

LEICESTER, England (AFP) - – Australia's second-string side beat English champions Leicester 25-16 at Welford Road here on Tuesday ahead of the Test team's clash against England at Twickenham this weekend.

But they were pushed hard on a cold and wet evening by a Tigers team featuring 10 internationals.

Australia scored the only two tries of the match, with wing Lachie Turner going over early in the game before flanker Scott Higginbotham went in late on.

Stand-off Berrick Barnes accounted for the rest of the tourists' scores, two conversions, three penalties and a drop-goal accounting for a 16-point tally.

Leicester, who last year defeated world champions South Africa in a tour match, saw all of their points come courtesy of five penalties from the boot of outside-half Billy Twelvetrees.

"We are delighted with the win," said Australia coach Robbie Deans, a longstanding supporter of midweek tour matches.

"This is the nearest our young side can get to a Test match. You can't replicate this on the training ground," the New Zealander added. "Seven of our guys put on the jersey for the first time."

Leicester coach Richard Cockerill was disappointed by his side's failure to stay in front after edging into a 15-13 second half lead.

But the former England hooker also praised Australia's performance.

"I'm a little disappointed," said Cockerill. "It was a fierce contest, we gave them an early lead (13-0) but we got right back in it.

"The momentum was with us, we were 15-13 up and we should have closed the game out and in the end the scoreline was too heavily in their favour."

However, turning to Australia, he added: "Their scrum was good tonight, they are very dangerous with the ball in hand and played with great physicality."

Barnes kicked the first points of the match and 3-0 became 10-0 when, following an attacking lineout, a Wallaby drive sucked in Leicester defenders.

Australia scrum-half Luke Burgess gathered a loose ball before bursting clear and finding Turner for a try which Barnes converted.

Several Wallaby infringements were not to the liking of South African referee Jonathan Kaplan and Twelvetrees capitalised on the opportunities to bring Leicester back into the match, with just a point in it as the teams turned round.

Both sides had their moments early in the second half before Twelvetrees nudged the Tigers in front after Australia failed to roll away at the tackle.

Barnes had a hit and miss night with the boot but, as the game entered the closing stages, he was on target with a 72nd minute penalty and a drop-goal a minute before full-time.

Australia, who last weekend defeated Wales 26-15, were now three points up and, with Leicester chasing the game, a late turnover led to Higginbotham's breakaway try, which Barnes converted.
