Motown turns 50, proud of musical, social legacy
DETROIT - Motown has always been about more than music. As the soul empire turns 50 on Monday, its founders are looking back at its brand of music dubbed the "Motown sound" that remains popular today and the record company's role in breaking down racial barriers in America. Founded in 1959 in Detroit by songwriter and entrepreneur Berry Gordy using an $800 family loan, Motown plans a year-long celebration with record releases, documentaries and exhibitions. There is even talk of a Broadway musical in 2010.
"Slumdog Millionaire" in the money at L.A. awards
LOS ANGELES . It solidifies its status as an Oscar frontrunner ahead of the January 22 nominations announcement.
"60 Minutes" unveils special edition DVD on Obama
LOS ANGELES - Taking its cue from Barack Obama's slogan "Yes we can," the team at venerable news program "60 Minutes" is taking its chances in the DVD market with a special edition disc covering the president-elect's path to the White House. News programing has never been as hot an item as movies or television dramas on DVDs but CBS, the network behind "60 Minutes, says it could release future discs using the program's brand despite the short shelf-life of news programing.
Actor Ryan O'Neal pleads guilty to drug charge
LOS ANGELES - Actor Ryan O'Neal, best known as star of the 1970 film "Love Story," pleaded guilty on Friday to possessing methamphetamine and was ordered to complete 18 months of drug counseling. As part of the plea, the 67-year-old actor's case will be dismissed if he successfully completes the drug diversion program.
Private memorial service held for Jett Travolta
LOS ANGELES - Friends and family of John Travolta held a private memorial service on Thursday for the actor's son, Jett, whose sudden death last week brought an outpouring of grief from fans. The service took place at the Florida home of Travolta and his actress wife, Kelly Preston. Security staff outside the residence kept the media at bay and details were scarce.
Ex-Sopranos actor sentenced to 10 years
NEW YORK - Actor Lillo Brancato Jr., who starred alongside Robert De Niro in the 1993 movie "A Bronx Tale" and played a bit part on "The Sopranos," was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday for his role in an attempted burglary that killed an off-duty police officer. Brancato, 32, was convicted of attempted burglary on December 22 but acquitted of felony murder for the 2005 incident in the Bronx section of New York City in which officer Daniel Enchautegui was shot and killed.
"The Unborn" an unintentionally funny horror
LOS ANGELES - Groans and giggles rather than shrieks of horror will greet "The Unborn," a horror film from about a dybbuk or demon determined to enter the body of a young woman who spends much of the movie in panties and T-shirt. Writer-director David S. Goyer's Rogue Pictures release, opening Friday, spends too much time establishing the lore and beliefs of Jewish mysticism only to abandon them at nearly every key moment in favor of lore and laws of horror films -- crawling bugs, spooky dreams, visions of dead people and things that rattle, shake and bump in the night.
Golden Globes could yield some surprises
LOS ANGELES - When an athlete's fortunes turn abruptly, sports journalists like to say he or she has been Pipped, a reference to 1920s New York Yankees first baseman Wally Pipp, who was replaced one day by an upstart named Lou Gehrig. Gehrig went on to play more than 2,000 consecutive games and become an icon; Pipp never got his job back. Through the years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has endured more heat than a short-order cook for some of its Golden Globe choices, with some saying a victory has little bearing on the Oscars. For all the criticism, though, the Globes have been known to Pipp an established candidate and change the direction of the Oscar race.
Directors Guild unveils feature film nominees
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood directors on Thursday named the nominees for their film awards, with Christopher Nolan and his Batman movie "The Dark Knight" among those vying for top honor from the Directors Guild of America. The DGA awards are a key stop on the road to the Oscars, the world's top film awards, because DGA winners have a history of going on to win the Academy Award for best director.
Fox News follows actor Gary Sinise's Iraq trip
NEW YORK - Ever since the September 11 attacks moved him to appreciate members of the military more than ever, "CSI: NY" star Gary Sinise has been on a mission to increase awareness of their contributions to this country. It's a mission that has taken him to Iraq four times and Afghanistan as well as military bases in Europe, Asia and the U.S. And it's one that is chronicled in an hourlong documentary narrated by Sinise and airing at 9 p.m. Saturday on the Fox News Channel.
