ADVERTISEMENT "We think the Japan-US relation is the foundation," Hatoyama said after their call, part of a flurry of talks he held with world leaders. "I told him that we want to build constructive, future-oriented Japan-US relations." Hatoyama, whose centre-left Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) ended 54 years of almost unbroken conservative rule in Sunday's elections, has in the past criticised "US-led globalism" and called for "more equal" ties with Washington. His DPJ has also questioned Japanese support for some US military operations -- a view held most strongly by left-leaning party members and likely coalition partners who stress the importance of Japan's pacifist constitution. But Hatoyama has also echoed Obama's election slogan of "change" and pointed at similarities between their goals, signalling that much of his past criticism was aimed mainly at the former US administration of George W. Bush. Hatoyama later said that he had told Obama that "change required a lot of courage, but it was American people and President Obama across the ocean who gave Japanese people the courage." Hatoyama -- who is set to take over as prime minister on September 16 from the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) Taro Aso -- also praised Obama for his stance on nuclear arms reduction, climate change and other global issues. In other forays into world diplomacy, Hatoyama said he had also spoken by telephone with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Spain's Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. Hatoyama told reporters in the evening that he had told the UN chief that, in global efforts to combat climate change, "Japan will show leadership on the international scene by pursuing a clear goal." His party has pledged to set a target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent from 1990 levels by 2020, a far more ambitious cut than the eight percent reduction goal of outgoing Prime Minister Aso. Hatoyama also met the ambassador of Russia, with which Japan has a long-simmering territorial row over a group of islands which has prevented them from signing a post-World War II peace treaty. "Regarding the territorial issue, it is important to build a relationship of trust between our heads of state," Hatoyama said after his meeting with Russian ambassador Mikhail Bely. Hatoyama said he was planning to meet Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev at a G20 summit in Pittsburgh in late September, where he would also talk with the other international leaders he had spoken with by phone. The premier-in-waiting also met the new US ambassador, John Roos. They shared a light moment when Hatoyama showed him his football helmet from Stanford University, which both men attended in the 1970s. The new US envoy, a former Silicon valley lawyer, said afterwards they had discussed how to deepen ties "across a broad range of issues, not only strategic issues but scientific issues and cultural matters." Earlier, following the Obama-Hatoyama telephone talk, the United States said it welcomed an "independent" role for Japan, but it also stood firm that it would not back off from earlier agreements with Japan on security. The DPJ has long suggested reviewing the status of the 47,000 US troops based in Japan, mostly on southern Okinawa island, where the large American presence has often caused frictions with local residents. Speaking after his "very warm talk" with Roos, Hatoyama said on the Okinawa question: "This problem will be solved for the very first time when the interests of the Japanese, the US government and the people of Okinawa align. "I don't think a quick resolution will be possible, but basically I still do think it should be reviewed," he added.
