David Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, told a Sunday morning news talk show that Al Qaeda is no longer operating in Afghanistan. He told "Fox News Sunday" that the terror network's senior leadership has moved to the western region of Pakistan. He said affiliated groups remain in the country, but the main organization has suffered "very significant losses" in recent months. Petraeus' Central Command oversees U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said he believes Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahiri still remain in command of Al Qaeda, and he said leadership is rooted in western Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan. "There's no question that Al Qaeda's senior leadership has been there and has been in operation for years," Petraeus told "Fox News Sunday's" Chris Wallace. He also praised the Pakistani government for its efforts to combat recent uprisings of the extremist Taliban forces operating in Pakistan. The Taliban is closely allied with Al Qaeda. The group is trying to extend its territory past the northern Swat valley, a move which Petraeus said has "galvanized all of Pakistan" against the Taliban. Petreaus made similar comments on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday talk show.
