As details of claims made by ruling Labour MPs hammered the government, and forced it to its lowest rating ever, the latest revelations are likely to hurt the Conservatives and may dent their poll lead. The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday that details of expenses claims by senior Conservatives showed the party's education spokesman received 7,000 pounds (7,800 euros, 10,650 dollars) for expenditures on a property in London before receiving thousands more on another house he bought later. One Tory MP claimed expenses for dog food, while another spent 4,000 pounds on a gardening bill, prompting an apology from party leader David Cameron, who described it as "another bad day for parliament". With an election due by mid-2010, Cameron and his party are looking to widen their opinion poll lead -- pegged at a whopping 22 percentage points by one recent survey -- but the latest news will not help their cause. "We are sorry that this happened and it needs to change," Cameron said in a statement. "We have to acknowledge just how bad this situation is and just how angry the public are. "We have to start by saying that the system we had and used was wrong and that we are sorry about that." Parliamentarians are to set up a new independent audit system to scrutinise the expenses claims, and the current authority was to discuss whether it could rush through publication of edited claims receipts. Although all lawmakers were acting within the rules, the expenses issue -- fuelled by the Telegraph publishing leaked details of individual MPs' claims over the last four days -- has provoked public fury about political profligacy. An ICM poll for the News of the World weekly on Sunday showed that 89 percent said the reputation of MPs had been damaged. The telephone survey of 508 people was conducted between May 8 and 9.
