Israel stood its ground even as world leaders demanded an investigation into Monday's commando raid in international waters and the swift release of the detainees. "We sent you on this mission and you operated outstandingly," armed forces chief of staff Lieutenant General Gabi Ashkenazi told soldiers wounded during the pre-dawn operation by special forces using helicopters and small craft. Flotilla raid spells gloom for Israel, peace talks: analysts Of the 682 people from 42 countries aboard the six ships that were towed to an Israeli port, 45 agreed to be deported immediately and were flown out Monday and Tuesday, immigration police spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said. She said more than 120 Arab nationals were issued deportation orders and handed to military police to be taken to the Jordanian border. The hundreds still detained apparently refused a demand that they sign a document saying they entered Israel illegally even though the ships were seized in international waters. Forty-eight activists and six soldiers were being treated in hospitals. Israel insists the boarding would have been peaceful if the commandos had not been attacked by dozens of club-wielding activists on the Turkish ferry Mavi Marmara, which carried most of the passengers. And a senior official made it clear Israel would not tolerate more attempts to breach its blockade of Hamas-run Gaza. Israelis shocked by bloody boat raid 'fiasco' But organisers insisted they would push ahead with a fresh bid to break the blockade in the coming days. "We knew what the risk would be and we will continue to run these flotillas," said Greta Berlin of the Free Gaza Movement. "The Rachel Corrie will probably be there within the week," she said, referring to an aid-laden cargo ship which is currently just to the east of Italy. Berlin said organisers were working on plans for a new flotilla which would leave for Gaza in July. But Israel was adamant it would not let any ships through. "We will not let any ships reach Gaza and supply what has become a terrorist base threatening the heart of Israel," deputy defence minister Matan Vilnai told public radio. As Israel and those behind the aid flotilla continued to trade blame, the UN Security Council condemned the storming of the fleet, and called for a "credible and transparent" investigation. It also demanded the immediate release of all ships and detained civilians. Anger at UN rights council debate on Gaza boat raid Israel has blamed activists on the Turkish vessel for the confrontation, saying its troops were attacked as they rappelled down from helicopters and that nine passengers were killed in the ensuing fight. Passengers had an entirely different story. In Berlin, visibly shaken German activists who were on board insisted that no passengers were armed with anything more than clubs. "Personally I saw two and a half wooden batons that were used ... There was really nothing else. We never saw any knives," former MP Norman Paech, 72, wrapped in a blue blanket, told reporters on his arrival back in Berlin. "This was a clear act of piracy," he added. Real bullets and electroshocks: witnesses tell of Gaza raid Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consulted with his security cabinet after he cut short a visit to Canada and called off talks at the White House with President Barack Obama. While expressing regret at the loss of life, Netanyahu insisted the Israeli commandos had "defended themselves from a lynching". But the Israeli press was scathing about the botched operation which sparked a welter of criticism over the failure by the political and military echelons to anticipate such a scenario. The deadly showdown provoked a crisis in Israel's relations with Turkey -- once its closest Muslim ally -- as diplomatic sources in Ankara confirmed at least four of the dead were Turkish. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan lashed out at the Jewish state, calling for it to be punished for its "bloody massacre" and urging international sanctions against its "lawlessness." Ankara had already recalled its ambassador and scrapped joint war games, as already fragile relations were plunged into a new crisis. Israeli authorities meanwhile said some of the supplies that were onboard the ships were trucked to Gaza and that more would follow. Flotilla organisers said the six ships carried some 10,000 tonnes of aid destined for Gaza, which has suffered a crippling blockade imposed by Israel in 2006 that Egypt has largely backed.
