Credit: Reuters/Arnd Wiegmann LONDON (Reuters) - Web search group Google Inc is phasing out internal use of rival Microsoft Corp's Windows operating system because of security concerns following a Chinese hacking incident, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. Technology  |  Media Citing several Google employees, the FT said the decision to move to other operating systems including Apple Inc's Mac OS and open-source Linux began in earnest in January after Google's Chinese operations were hacked. Internet security firm McAfee Inc said at the time the cyber attacks on Google and other businesses had exploited a previously unknown flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, which was vulnerable on all recent versions of Windows. The FT quoted one Google employee as saying: "We're not doing any more Windows. It is a security effort." Another said: "Getting a new Windows machine now requires CIO (chief information officer) approval." Google said in a statement: "We're always working to improve the efficiency of our business, but we do not comment on specific operational matters." Google, which already offers e-mail, Web and other software products that compete with Microsoft's offerings, is developing its own operating system based on its Chrome browser. It will initially target netbooks, or inexpensive, pared-down notebook PCs. Microsoft Windows runs about nine out of 10 of the world's personal computers. (Reporting by Georgina Prodhan; Editing by David Holmes) Technology Media Comments See All Comments (42)  |  Post Comment Jun 01, 2010 7:04am EDT Microsoft is such a dinosaur it is scary. It hasn’t had a hit product in years. Windows 7 is decent but every company is trying to think of ways to dump Microsoft just as Google is STORYBURNcom6 Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 7:29am EDT From what I heard those China Google people were using Windows XP. So I am not sure why Google was using such a weak OS. This sounds more like a precursor to Google touting its Chrome OS and trying to convince users to dump Windows. Personally I don’t trust Google anymore then I do Microsoft. jscott418 Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 8:14am EDT I dumped Windows years ago. To keep the OS running smoothly requires too many additional software packages (spyware, virus scan, etc.) in addition to defraging and error checking. I have been a happy Mac owner ever since. OSX is far superior to Microsoft Windows in my opinion. justanotherjoe Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 8:20am EDT Why was Google even using IE instead of Chrome – their own browser – in the first place? Why wouldn’t it suffice, from a security standpoint, to merely back away from IE, and require the use of a more secure browser? I think it is quite clear that there is a little bit more of a motive other than security. It is interesting that the story claims that Google would switch to a product of an even fiercer rival, Apple. I find this somewhat unlikely. Linux, also mentioed, is a much more likely option for Google. BigPenguinEars Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 8:50am EDT Buy Bye Microsoft… You should have listened to what your customers wanted, not spent all that time in bed with your corporate partners. anamericancynic Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 9:28am EDT Better late than never. All other M$ochists take note. HBC Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 9:41am EDT I haven’t used Windows in over ten years now. I run Slackware Linux and have never had a problem with my computer (unless I brake it myself). My computer runs all the time and I have no problems with viruses, software service packs, and the likes. OpenOffice in my opinion is superior to MS Office. Documents from OpenOffice can be read on many other platforms without any special tinkering. Browsers on Linux support open standards where MS browsers still want to force the use of proprietary code which blocks other browsers from accessing certain features. Apache is far superior MS IIS server software and it’s FREE. Open source also allows a user with sufficient skill, to modify his/her operating system to behave the way they want. MS does not allow this. Linux also separates the graphical interface from the OS engine itself. This way the GUI can be restarted if needed, without having to reboot the system. It also separates user and and administrator accounts. Users can administer their OWN accounts without opening the heart of the system. Benny_Acosta Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 9:51am EDT What a joke! Going from Win7 over to Mac OSX is like jumping in the hot tub time machine. Apple has been spending way too much time on their little iStuff endeavors. As for Google- their agenda is Google’s own OS and Chrome. This article is like Ford announcing it’s changing it’s own corporate fleet from Toyota to Hyundai- won’t you join us?! Now after driving those pieces of junk for awhile, you’ll think our new offerings are the best you’ve ever seen! 9 out of 10 computers- the numbers never significantly change, yet we keep having these “conversations”. YAWN…. mynamehear Report As Abusive     Jun 01, 2010 10:23am EDT This sounds stupid – why would they bother switching when they’re supposed to be doing their own OS and they can just switch to that instead soon enough. Sounds like a ploy to sell their own OS. It won’t be long until they have something bad to say about the Apple OS. Guess it is just easier to get people off the Apple OS and onto their own than off Windows and onto their own. Maybe the tech community will use Google’s OS but the average person won’t. kelliann Report As Abusive       See All Comments (42)       Add a Comment *We welcome comments that advance the story directly or with relevant tangential information.
