Purchases of autos, clothing, electronic devices and gasoline station sales led the way. Gasoline station sales alone beat the average monthly gain and rose by 1.6 percent. Sales of electronics and appliances came in next highest increasing by 1.4 percent. Sales of autos and clothing both rose 0.5 percent. However, the rise in sales of clothing at clothing stores did not transfer to an increase in sales at department stores.
