White House launches online offensive for Obama speech
AFP - Friday, June 5
WASHINGTON (AFP) - - The White House went into online overdrive Thursday for President Barack Obama's landmark speech in Cairo, hosting a live webcast, firing off Twitter updates and organizing a discussion on Facebook.

Obama's election-winning "New Media" team pulled out all the stops in what White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said was a bid to get the president's message to the Muslim world on "as many platforms as humanly possible."
Obama's 55-minute speech was posted on the White House channel on YouTube within minutes of its conclusion after being streamed live on the official White House website.
WhiteHouse.gov quickly provided a link to a full transcript of the president's remarks in English and also hosted a short video featuring the personal stories of Muslim Americans serving in the US government.
Another official site, America.gov, offered a podcast recording of the speech and transcripts of the entire address in a variety of languages including Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Farsi and Turkish.
Photographs of the event were posted on the White House page on photo-sharing site Flickr at flickr.com/photos/whitehouse.
The White House Twitter feed -- @whitehouse -- fired off nearly two dozen 140-character-or-less real-time updates during the speech to its some 250,000 followers around the world.
"Obama: The first issue that we have to confront is violent extremism in all of its forms," read one White House Twitter post. "Obama: Our daughters can contribute just as much to society as our sons," read another.
Obama's speech was a hot topic of discussion on Twitter with the word "Cairo" among the top 10 "trending topics" on the micro-blogging service.
The State Department, meanwhile, offered SMS text messages with highlights of the speech to mobile phone users in four languages: Arabic, English, Farsi and Urdu.
SMS recipients were invited to send back their comments on the speech and selected messages were being posted at america.gov/sms-comments.html.
Most of the comments were laudatory -- "Thanks. Hope we make peace for all," wrote a user from Egypt -- but not all.
"There was one issue, and only one issue on which Obama needed to deliver, and that was Palestine," said a message from Britain. "He failed miserably! ... For all the hype, it was a disappointment."
A discussion about the speech was also taking place on a Facebook page specifically created by the White House at apps.facebook.com/whitehouselive with users trading their views and comments.
White House spokesman Gibbs said ahead of the speech that the administration planned to do all it could to publicize the event.
"There will be a great effort on our part to distribute this through different means, social networking sites, in order to get this in front of as many eyes throughout the world as we can," Gibbs said.
"The Internet team here is working with a host of others to get this information to as many platforms as humanly possible so that people will get a chance all over the world to see what the president has to say," he said.
Besides relying on the Web, the Obama administration enlisted the official US government Arabic-language radio and television outlets in a bid to spread the message.
Alhurra Television station and Radio Sawa broadcast the speech live with simultaneous Arabic translation and a live stream of the speech was available on alhurra.com.
Alhurra promised 14 hours of live news reporting, analysis and commentary on the speech as well as "the reactions of activists, scholars and the viewing public from across the Middle East."
