"Avatar" earns $73 million in box office
LOS ANGELES - "Titanic" director James Cameron's "Avatar," a 3-D extravaganza hyped as a giant leap in cinematic prowess, earned an estimated $73 million during its first weekend at the North American box office, distributor 20th Century Fox said on Sunday. The opening for the costly sci-fi film fell short of industry forecasts in the $85 million range. But the News Corp unit said the tally beat its internal projections, and noted that an enormous snow storm along the East Coast crippled business for all movies.
Eminem named artist of decade on U.S. charts
LOS ANGELES based on activity on two charts: the Billboard 200 albums list and the Billboard Hot 100 songs tally.
Alicia Keys finds "freedom" from Motown sound
NEW YORK - A music industry desperate for bankable superstars has all but anointed Alicia Keys as heir to the golden era of Motown, when Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson and others made it seem easy to pump out timeless R&B hits. Keys, however, is haunted by the prospect.
Madonna leads list of 2009's top music tours
NASHVILLE - A year ago, many were predicting a downturn -- if not disaster -- for the music touring industry in 2009 based on a gloomy economic forecast, particularly in North America. A look at the top tours of the year shows that there were plenty of acts people wanted to see. A dozen of the top 25 tours topped 1 million in attendance, and Madonna and U2 reported 2.1 million and 3 million tickets sold, respectively. The numbers are based on data reported to Billboard Boxscore fro the print magazine issues dated December 6, 2008, through November 21, 2009.
"Avatar" midnight screenings pull in $3.5 mln
LOS ANGELES - Director James Cameron's big-budget film "Avatar" took in $3.5 million at its initial midnight screenings on Friday in the United States and Canada, ticket tracker Hollywood.com Box Office said on Friday. That figure pales in comparison to other, recent openings of highly anticipated films like "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which raked in a record $26.3 million for its debut midnight screenings in November.
Jon and Kate Gosselin divorce finalized
LOS ANGELES - A Pennsylvania judge finalized reality TV stars Jon and Kate Gosselin's divorce on Friday, and she gets custody of their eight children. The stars of the show "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" on cable network TLC filed for divorce in June, after announcing their split in an episode that drew 10.6 million viewers.
The five legal cases that defined the year in music
NEW YORK - Almost a decade after the major labels launched their legal assault on Napster, courts are still writing the rules of the road for the music business's digital future. Companies can't set out to build a business based on their users' infringement of copyright, courts had already ruled. But the precise meaning of that dictate remains in doubt. What steps must sites take to combat infringement? What are the proper penalties for those who infringe? This year, courts inched toward resolution of these questions, giving labels, publishers and artists a bit more certainty as they decide whom to work with and whom to sue.
"Alien" screenwriter Dan O'Bannon dead at 63
LOS ANGELES - Hollywood writer Dan O'Bannon, whose script for the hit space thriller "Alien" introduced some of the most terrifying creatures of science-fiction lore to the big screen, has died at age 63. O'Bannon, who also co-wrote the Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action film "Total Recall," died Thursday, the Writers Guild of America confirmed on Friday. Online media reports said he had suffered a brief, undisclosed illness.
Fox says Time Warner Cable may drop Fox TV shows
NEW YORK - News Corp warned that testy carriage negotiations with Time Warner Cable Inc could leave viewers unable to see programing from its Fox broadcast network, including it blockbuster hit "American Idol" and NFL football. Negotiations between the two sides have been primarily held up by a disagreement over the value of Fox's free-to-air broadcast network. Fox is asking Time Warner Cable for around $1 a subscriber in payment for the retransmission rights to carry its network, according to a person familiar with the talks.
Michael Jackson tribute concert scrapped
VIENNA - A Michael Jackson tribute concert, which was moved from Vienna to London after top acts dropped out, has been canceled after the event's organizer closed down, the company's liquidator said on Friday. Organizers, led by Michael's brother, Jermaine, canceled the Vienna concert in September after struggling to get stars to perform on short notice.
