Spanish female mountaineer bids for 12th top peak

 AFP - Wednesday, April 22
MADRID (AFP) - - A Spanish climber is preparing to scale her 12th mountain of over 8,000 metres as part of her goal to become the first woman to conquer the world's 14 highest peaks, her team said Tuesday.

Edurne Pasaban and her team are at the Nepali base camp of the 8,585-metre Mount Kangchenjunga in the Himalayas, which she hopes to climb in the coming weeks.
If successful, it would be the 12th peak of over 8,000 metres that she has conquered.
The 35-year-old hopes to be the first woman to scale all 14 of the "eight-thousanders" on the planet, but is in competition for the record with Italy's Nives Meroi.
The 14 summits are all located in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges in Asia.
Pasaban, who began her bid to make history in 2001, has already scaled the world's two highest mountains, Everest and K2.
Aside from Kangchenjunga, she has still to climb Annapurna and Shisi Pangma to meet her goal.
Italy's Reinhold Messner became the first man to climb all 14 summits in 1986.
