The demand came at a rally in central Seoul to mark the anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule. Police said the gathering drew about 150,000 people while organisers claimed one million Christians took part in rallies and prayer services nationwide. Historians say a pro-Japanese government in Seoul was forced to sign the accord to help Japan annex the peninsula in 1910 until its World War II defeat in 1945. "We declare the 1910 accord invalid and want the Japanese government to clarify its official position about this," the Christians said in a statement. In a Liberation Day speech, South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak welcomed Japan's efforts to improve ties but said some issues had yet to be resolved. "I have taken note of Japan's effort, which represents one step forward," he said. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who has sought stronger ties with South Korea, issued a fresh apology Tuesday for Japan's colonial rule and promised to hand over precious Korean cultural artifacts. Japanese leaders have previously expressed regret but such sentiments have been dismissed as insincere by Asian neighbours, partly because of comments made by some conservative politicians who refuse to admit to Japan's past aggression. Lee praised Kan for issuing the apology but said there remained "issues that have to be resolved". "The two countries are called upon to take concrete measures to forge a new relationship for another 100 years," he added, without elaborating. Lee said the two nations should never forget history, while working together for the future. "This is the way and direction Seoul and Tokyo have to take," he added. The two countries normalised relations in 1965 but Japan has often been criticised by its neighbours for glossing over wartime atrocities. Some older Koreans have bitter memories of the 1910-1945 colonial period when Japan ruthlessly suppressed resistance movements and tried to eradicate Korean culture, even forcing people at one point to change their names. Ties have also been strained by Japan's reasserted claims over a tiny chain of Seoul-controlled islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).
