Ellis try double keeps Tigers on top-four target

SYDNEY (AFP) - – English Test backrower Gareth Ellis claimed a second-half try double to propel West Tigers to a 43-18 win over Australian National Rugby League finals rivals Penrith on Sunday.

Ellis was a handful for the Panthers' defence, powering through to score in the 58th and 70th minutes and keep the Tigers' top four hopes on track.

The Tigers are level with the Gold Coast Titans on 30 points, two points behind NRL leaders St George Illawarra Dragons, who take on the Manly Sea Eagles at home on Monday.

Wests Tigers finished conclusive seven-tries-to-three winners with New Zealand international Benji Marshall kicking seven goals from as many attempts.

Penrith slumped to fourth spot after losing five of their last six games and are now in danger of missing out on a home final with three rounds left.

Gold Coast claimed their fourth consecutive win with a 37-18 win over the North Queensland Cowboys at home on Saturday.

The Titans appeared to have the game locked up at halftime leading 19-0 but the Cowboys stormed back after the break to trail 19-18 before fullback Preston Campbell sealed the result by laying on two tries in three minutes.

New Zealand Warriors capitalised on the Sydney Roosters' upset loss to move to sixth place with a hard-fought 22-10 victory over Newcastle Knights in Auckland on Sunday.

Giant winger Manu Vatuvei scored a hat-trick of tries for the Warriors to take his season's tally to 17 tries from 15 appearances and just two short of Stacey Jones' club record of 77 tries.

Lowly Cronulla shocked the Roosters 18-12 at home on Friday for their second win over the Roosters this season and put a major dent in Brian Smith's side's top-four aspirations.

Manly are currently in seventh spot ahead of the Brisbane Broncos, who lost ground with a 30-14 defeat to Parramatta Eels at Lang Park on Friday to remain in eighth place.

South Sydney missed the chance to leapfrog the Broncos after going down 18-16 to defending champions Melbourne Storm in Melbourne.

Two tries by Souths winger Nathan Merritt set up a thrilling finish but the Storm, who are playing for no points this season as punishment for cheating the NRL salary cap, held on to deny the Rabbitohs.

Canberra Raiders maintained their finals' hopes with a 28-14 win over the Canterbury Bulldogs at the Sydney Olympic stadium on Saturday.
