Aussie Slingsby arrows in on dethroning world champ
WEYMOUTH, England (AFP) - – Australia's Tom Slingsby has promised to topple defending champion Paul Goodison from his perch at the Laser World Championships later this month.
Slingsby successfully defended his Skandia Sail for Gold title, the concluding ISAF World Cup regatta, at the London 2012 Olympic venue in Weymouth.
The 25-year-old went into the decisive race of the week knowing that if he finished within four places of 2008 Olympic Champion Goodison then victory was assured.
Slingsby marked his rival from the start with the leading pair tussling thrillingly at the back of the fleet before Goodison was handed a penalty, effectively ending his slender hopes.
But despite his elation at the manner of victory, the former two-time World champion's thoughts were already turning to the resumption of his battle with the Brit.
"Paul is the one to beat and hopefully I can do it again at the Worlds," he said.
"I'm sure he will come back and work harder and I'll have to match that but you gain a lot of confidence from beating someone like him on his home waters.
"Paul will be out to get another World Championship in his home country so he's going to be hard to beat but I'm confident that I can give it a go.
"It was always my plan today to go after Paul from the very start and I think he knew that because it was the lowest risk option available to me.
"We both made some mistakes but I was really pleased to come out on top and secure the win."
Australian sailors won three Olympic class titles to go with their victory in the Paralympic Skud-18 class on Friday.
Nicky Souter skippered the women's match racing team to gold with a 3-1 victory over France, while Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen cruised home in the 49er.
Outteridge and Jensen sailed home in fourth position to seal their gold medal ahead of the Danish pair of Peter Kruger Andersen and Nicolai Thorsell. And Outteridge praised the way the Australian sailors adapted to the variable conditions, with the 2012 Olympics now less than two years away.
"It's been pretty good for the Australian guys over here this week, we've put in some great performances across the classes," said the 24-year-old.
"It's great that we've come here two year in from the games and sailed well.
"Every day we're out sailing we're learning things about the course which is great because we don't have the advantage the British sailors have of sailing here every day.
"It's nice to know that we don't have to be here every day and that we can still come to Weymouth and beat them.
"It's our third visit to Weymouth and each time there have been different conditions so we've got to make the most of it, which we definitely have this time."
