Eager fans greet "Call of Duty" launch
SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK - Activision Blizzard Inc's <ATVI.O> hugely anticipated "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" video game went on sale early Tuesday morning, welcomed by eager fans who lined up hours in advance of the release. The first-person shooter game is set to be one of the biggest and fastest-selling titles in history, challenging records set by blockbuster releases from the "Grand Theft Auto" series.
LinkedIn and Twitter link up
SAN FRANCISCO - LinkedIn and Twitter have linked up. Starting immediately, users of LinkedIn and Twitter can cross-file to each other's services, by checking a box on either Twitter or LinkedIn. LinkedIn is the largest professional social network, with 50 million members around the world who post information about themselves, such as resumes, to help find jobs or employees, and to stay in touch with each other.
Nokia, Samsung step up smartphone battle
HELSINKI - The world's two largest cell phone makers, Nokia <NOK1V.HE> and Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, have unveiled their latest attempts to keep pace in the battle with smartphone rivals like iPhone and Blackberry. Nokia said on Tuesday it has started deliveries of its top-of-the-range N900, while Samsung announced it will launch its own open mobile platform, bada, in December as it tries to make up for a late start in the smartphone market.
Google consulting with DOJ on books deal
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> and a group representing authors and publishers said they are in talks with the U.S. government over modifications to a controversial electronic books licensing deal and they plan to file an amended version of the plan with the court on Friday. The parties have been in discussions with the Department of Justice prior to and following a hearing last month, the parties said in a letter to U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin on Monday.
Yahoo aims to boost margins
SINGAPORE - Yahoo Inc <YHOO.O> wants to triple its operating margin to 15-20 percent over the next three years by increasing revenue and keeping costs under control, CEO Carol Bartz said on Tuesday. She also said that Yahoo, the top U.S. seller of online display ads, planned to expand its business in India and hire more people there as it targets emerging markets with low Internet penetration and high growth potential.
RIM to help app developers use ads, micropayments
TORONTO - Research In Motion <RIM.TO> is making it easier for software developers make money from the applications they develop for its popular BlackBerry smartphone as the company falters in the face of stiff competition from rivals like Apple Inc <AAPL.O>. New plans announced on Monday will let developers of games, news summaries and other "apps" insert advertising into the programs more easily. RIM will also help developers better integrate and process payments for premium content.
Nokia to replace 14 million phone chargers
HELSINKI - Nokia <NOK1V.HE> is replacing 14 million cellphone chargers which it says could give users an electric shock. The world's biggest mobile phone maker said its Chinese supplier BYD would cover the costs of recalling the chargers, for which handset makers normally pay around $1.
Google buys mobile ad firm for $750 million
SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc <GOOG.O> said on Monday that it was acquiring of AdMob, one of the largest mobile advertising networks, for $750 million, widening its bet that cell phone advertising could become the Internet's next-big money maker. Google's agreement to buy AdMob in an all-stock deal would give it a key asset as it seeks to extend the reach of its online advertising business from the tethered world of PCs to the smartphones that consumers increasingly use to access the Web while on-the-go.
Online auction site launches for rich and famous
NEW YORK - Millionaires down on their luck now have a place to sell their mega-yachts, super-cars and family jewels without having to resort to the pawn shop. An Internet auction site devoted to millionaires launches officially on Monday and is likely to profit from the worst recession in decades, which has extended its reach to the rich and famous in the United States, BillionaireXchange said.
Electronic Arts buys social game maker Playfish
NEW YORK - Electronic Arts Inc <ERTS.O> has acquired privately held Playfish for $275 million in cash plus other consideration as the maker of the "Madden NFL" series expands in the growing social gaming sector. EA paid about $275 million in cash for 2-year-old Playfish, which makes games for people to play on computers with friends, unlike traditional videogames that need dedicated consoles.
