"Samples we took do indicate that we've got a heating of some sort underground, that means that there's some combustion of material generating the gases that go with that," Pike River chief executive Peter Whittall said. There has been no contact with the missing men since an explosion at the mine on Friday and Whittall said "it's still not at a point where it's safe for rescue teams to enter the mine". Police commander Gary Knowles said rescuers were holding out hope that the miners had survived. "We are still focusing on a rescue operation, I would like to get underground and get these guys out," he told reporters. Knowles said the rescue was "not a case of simply putting on a mask and running in there". "The risk is huge, he said. "With the activity that's happening underground, I'm not prepared to put guys down there until it's a stable environment and we can bring these guys out." The miners, who range in age from a 17-year-old, believed to be on his first shift, to a 62-year-old, include two Australians, two Britons and a South African. They are thought to be only about 150 metres (500 feet) from the surface but 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles) from the mine entrance in a tunnel that runs beneath the Paparoa mountain range to the coal seam. Whittall said the fire may only be smouldering coal, rather than large flames, but it was generating the poison gas carbon monoxide. "When you talk about it as a fire, people think large flames and that sort of thing (but) what we're talking about is the gases that arise from combustion and that can just be a low smouldering of coal in the ground," he said. He said analysis of air samples taken from the mine showed gas levels were "trending down" but it was unclear when rescue teams would receive a green light to go underground. The mine chief said rescuers planned to drill a hole into the shaft to get a clearer picture of the situation underground in the mine, located about 50 kilometres north of Greymouth on New Zealand's South Island. Some relatives of the missing have publicly questioned the delay in trying to reach the miners and authorities said families would be escorted up to the isolated mine site Sunday to met with rescuers. Laurie Drew, whose son 21-year-old, Zen, is trapped in the mine, said he wanted to hear solutions, not reasons why the rescue could not be done. "If I had it my way I'd go in there, gas or not," he told TVNZ while wearing his missing son's jacket. "I just want my boy home."
