All Blacks on brink of 'grand slam' after Ireland win
DUBLIN (AFP) - – New Zealand coach Graham Henry dismissed talk of Tri-Nations teams having the edge over Europe's best after a win over Ireland left them on the brink of yet another 'grand slam'.
The All Blacks' 38-18 victory at Lansdowne Road on Saturday meant only Wales were now left standing in the way of a third New Zealand clean sweep of the 'Home Nations' (England, Scotland and Ireland the others) in five years.
Trademark ruthlessness saw the All Blacks remain unbeaten against Ireland, a run encompassing 24 Tests in 105 years, with New Zealand scoring three of their four tries either side of half-time to turn a 13-12 deficit into a 33-13 lead.
Victory also gave former schoolmaster Henry his 100th win as a Test coach.
But with Scotland defeating world champions South Africa 21-17 at Murrayfield earlier on Saturday and England beating Australia 35-18 the week before, Henry refused to get carried away by suggestions of southern supremacy ahead of next year's World Cup in New Zealand.
"How did the Scots go? Playing the world champions, weren't they?," he said. "I think they had a win so they've done okay.
"And the English beat the Australians.
"It's highly competitive at international level at the top end."
Asked if the present All Black side were better than the one he guided to a 'grand slam' in 2008, Henry replied: "It's hard to look back really and compare. I can't remember much about that.
"I know what I did in 1960 but I can't remember what I did yesterday," the 64-year-old added.
New Zealand now head for a tour finale against Wales, a side Henry coached for four years from 1998 to 2002.
Wales were desperately disappointing during a 16-16 draw with Fiji in Cardiff on Friday and have now failed to win any of their last six Tests.
Few would give much for their chances of snapping that run this coming Saturday given Wales's last win over New Zealand came in 1953.
"I have been surprised they've lost a few games," Henry admitted. "We never go in with any false illusions about the opposition.
"We thought the Irish would be very competitive today and they were and we think the Welsh will be mighty competitive next week.
"We've played them enough times. Not very long ago (when New Zealand beat Wales in 2004) it was 26-25 so it's pretty competitive."
But for all their victories, Tri-Nations champions New Zealand have won the World Cup just once, when they staged the inaugural edition back in 1987.
And it was only three years ago that Henry retained his job as New Zealand coach after their World Cup quarter-final loss to France.
So he was understandably coy over the All Blacks' prospects despite seeing his side run in four tries against Ireland, two from No 8 Kieran Read and the others from lock Anthony Boric and replacement forward Sam Whitelock, in a match where fly-half Dan Carter kicked 18 points to be two shy of England stand-off Jonny Wilkinson's Test world record of 1,178.
"I think we are pretty happy where we are going at this point in but there's a lot of rugby to be played between now and the World Cup," Henry said.
Ireland's performance was much improved on their 23-21 loss to South Africa a fortnight earlier.
However, dejected Ireland coach Declan Kidney, whose side scored tries through flanker Stephen Ferris and captain Brian O'Driscoll, could not hide his frustration at the outcome.
"We judge ourselves on results so we're extremely disappointed that we lost to 20 points.
"We need to hang on to the ball a bit better. I wouldn't argue with their finishing being the difference."
Ireland could be without several players for their November finale against the ever-physical Argentina here on November 28 after a bruising encounter.
Hooker Rory Best requires an operation on his cheekbone, centre O'Driscoll needs an X-ray on his shoulder while elsewhere in the backs Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald are set for knee scans while Gordon D'Arcy and Tommy Bowe both having tight calves.
New Zealand's only major concern was lock Tom Donnelly's knee injury.
