Carrie Underwood wins country music's top award
LAS VEGAS - Carrie Underwood was named country music's top entertainer for the second year in a row on Sunday and Miranda Lambert won three awards, including best album, as the two young women ruled the once male-dominated Academy of Country Music Awards. Underwood, a small-town Oklahoma girl who first shot to fame only five years ago on TV's "American Idol," became the first woman to win Entertainer of the Year twice -- firmly taking her place among country music's greats.
Not as close Aerosmith members put differences aside to tour
LONDON - Aerosmith are not as close as they once were, but the "Boston bad boys" have put their considerable differences behind them to tour Europe for the first time in three years, guitarist Joe Perry said. Perry, who led a recent uprising against lead singer Steven Tyler, said of his bandmate that he was "stronger than ever" despite a stint in rehab for an addiction to prescription painkillers related to 10 years of performance injuries.
Jay-Z -- and even Beyonce -- rock Coachella fest
INDIO, California - After a slow start owing to traffic backups and a massive tangle at a two-fold ticket and security check-in for tens of thousands, southern California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was in full swing by late afternoon Friday and back to its happiest-musical-place on-Earth status Saturday. According to officials, 75,000 or more attended daily, and that's not counting the many thousands working the event, as well as performers, their crews, entourages and guests. At times, it felt like perhaps too many in the venue; navigation was not easy, making it more difficult than during past years to catch a little of this and that.
"Back-up Plan" worked well for director Alan Poul
LOS ANGELES - It never hurts to have a fall-back position when things don't go as expected, and for first-time film director Alan Poul "The Back-Up Plan" proved to be as good as its name. Poul is no newcomer to Hollywood, having produced movies such as "Candyman" and television shows from "My So-Called Life" in the mid-1990s to 2008's "Swingtown." Along the way, he earned Emmy nominations for funereal drama "Six Feet Under."
Punk pioneer McLaren to be buried on Thursday
LONDON - British punk pioneer Malcolm McLaren's funeral will be held in London on Thursday, his son said on Monday. The former manager of the 1970s punk band Sex Pistols and ex-partner of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood died earlier this month aged 64 of a rare form of cancer. "In celebration of Malcolm's life we are asking people to observe a minute of mayhem at midday on 22nd April," his son Joseph Corre said on the website of human rights charity Humanade, which he supports.
Summer blockbusters present musical challenges
LOS ANGELES - When John Debney came to score "Iron Man 2," he faced a particular challenge: Being consistent with the first outing in the action franchise, while adding his own distinct voice. "It's quite different from the first score, but it retains a lot of the same cool elements," Debney says. "There's a lot of guitar in it, but most of it is couched with the orchestra, so we never lose sight of that whole thing."
Pop pioneer hails Germany despite Holocaust misery
BERLIN - As a teenager, Gershon Kingsley was forced to flee his home, friends and family to escape the Nazis -- but the composer of evergreen electronic hit "Popcorn" is still grateful that he grew up in Germany. Cast out of Berlin into Middle Eastern deserts aged just 15, Kingsley would not see his family for eight years after he fled to what is now Israel before the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938.
Drew Carey developing hidden-camera show
LOS ANGELES - CBS is developing a hidden-camera show starring Drew Carey. The host of "The Price Is Right" is teaming with producer Tom Forman for a project with the working title "WTF!" -- which in this case stands for "Wow That's Funny!"
Michael Buble dominates Canada music awards
TORONTO - Michael Buble felt the "love" at the Juno Awards during the weekend, picking up four honors at Canada's top music ceremony. The Canadian crooner earned trophies for pop album and album for "Crazy Love," and single of the year for "Haven't Met You Yet." He also grabbed the fan choice award, having gone into the St. John's, Newfoundland, event with six nominations.
"Pornography: A Thriller" a multiple misnomer
NEW YORK - It's helpful that the makers of "Pornography: A Thriller" have provided a description in the title because otherwise it would be hard to tell exactly what the hell the film is supposed to be. This ambitious, elliptical three-part meditation about the disappearance of a gay porn star wears its Lynch/Cronenberg aspirations a little too heavily. Despite a definite visual stylishness, the film is more baffling than intriguing. It opened in limited release on Friday.
