KHARTOUM (AFP) - – Campaign posters line the walls of Khartoum's "Two Niles" university, yet another institutional stronghold of President Omar al-Beshir for whom Sudan's educated youth make up a loyal generation. The veteran leader -- who came to power in a 1989 military coup backed by Islamists -- and his ruling National Congress Party (NCP) have "taken control of the universities," bemoaned Nagi Mussa, a medical student who co-founded the opposition movement Grifna (We've Had It) with two other students. At Neelain (Two Niles) University where some 60,000 students are enrolled, there is little suspense over the results of Sudan's first multi-party election since 1986 that ended on Thursday ahead of a near-certain win for Beshir. "There were many clashes between students in the run-up to the vote, but it's been calm since," a professor at the leading University of Khartoum told AFP on condition of anonymity. At Neelain, visitors are warmly welcomed but tours are strictly guided, starting with the School of Law which has 9,000 students. Abdelatif Hassan, in charge of public relations, points out a courtyard where posters of the different candidates plaster the walls, including that of Yasser Arman who was to run against Beshir for the former rebel southern Sudan People's Liberation Movement but eventually boycotted the election. "Here, students can have debates, even about politics," he said. "Most students support Beshir and the NCP," said Walid Ahmed, a third-year student, who dreams of one day living in America. "The NCP is represented here and I am a member. I voted for Beshir mainly for his views on religion but also because my whole family is NCP," explained Ahmed. Asma, a first-year student, doesn't belong to any party but she says "90 percent of the students are pro-Beshir." Sudan's two traditional heavyweight, the Umma party and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) who finished first and second respectively in the 1986 election, can barely pull in the youth today. "The young don't know the old parties like the Umma and the DUP. They only know Beshir's NCP," said Mohammed, a teacher in Omdurman, the capital's twin city. "Well it's better to be with the NCP. After you finish your studies, if you want work, the government can facilitate things for you," Walid Ahmed said. Ayman al-Treifi, 21, head of the NCP's youth wing at Neelain, receives visitors at his office, which doubles as the university's student union office. "Beshir is loved because he brought about the education revolution. Since then education has been for everyone," said Treifi, a science student. "Some 12 other parties are also represented (at the university). They are small but there is healthy competition," he said. But asked where to find them, he said: "They are at the university but I don't know where. They don't have their own offices." According to the Grifna's opposition movement's founder, only the University of Juba -- which is based in Khartoum -- has managed to escape the grip of the NCP. "We have a problem with the opposition, they are not committed. They are not challenging the regime," said Mussa. "We are walking the streets alone."
