Adam Lambert furor spreads to gay community
LOS ANGELES - "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert on Wednesday admitted he got carried away during his racy American Music Awards performance, as furor over his singing and dancing stoked a wider controversy in the U.S. gay community. More than 14 million people watched the gay, glam rocker close the live AMA telecast on Sunday with a performance that included Lambert kissing a male keyboard player and pushing the head of another performer into his crotch.
Swiss to release Polanski as soon as bail posted
ZURICH - Swiss authorities will release Roman Polanski into house arrest as soon as he posts $4.5 million bail while the film director fights extradition to face U.S. sentencing over a 1977 case of sex with a 13-year-old girl. The Justice Department said on Thursday that it had decided not to appeal against a decision by the Swiss Federal Criminal Court granting Polanski's request for release, and would free him as soon as bail conditions are met.
Donny Osmond calls "Dancing" victory a career high
LOS ANGELES - "Dancing With The Stars" champion Donny Osmond on Wednesday ranked his win on the television show at the top of his career achievements, saying his entire body hurts after weeks of grueling rehearsals. Osmond, who turns 52 next month, became the oldest winner of TV's ballroom dancing contest, despite having tangoed, jitterbugged and cha cha cha'd on a broken toe for weeks.
Oprah to visit White House for Christmas special
LOS ANGELES - The queen of daytime will interview the president of the United States during an ABC holiday special that brings together Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama. The network has announced that it will "Christmas at the White House: An Oprah Primetime Special" on Sunday, December 13, at 10 p.m. The show will feature an interview with the president, a conversation with the first couple and a tour of the White House. The special also will go behind the scenes as staffers prepare the White House for the holiday season.
Music stores see dream week with Boyle, Lambert
NEW YORK - U.S. music retailers are realizing a dream week with Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed A Dream" ringing cash registers far beyond expectations and Adam Lambert's album stirring sales after his sexually charged TV performance. Label and distribution executives project that based on early sales returns at major retailers and pre-orders at direct marketers like Amazon and QVC, Boyle's album is in contention to beat this year's top debut-week seller, Eminem's "Relapse."
Hollywood's mansion of magic celebrates 100 years
LOS ANGELES - One hundred years ago, a wealthy couple built a mansion in Hollywood and installed a speaking tube allowing them to order a Scotch whisky from their servants -- a handy trick, but nothing compared to what the home's later occupants would conjure up. Today under the name The Magic Castle, the mansion is a private club for magicians that has been around for 46 years, and is known by tricksters all over the world.
Phish electrifies fans with marathon show
NEW YORK show in Syracuse, N.Y., went on sale back in October, all 6,700 of them were gone in 15 minutes -- and with good reason. The last time Phish performed at the War Memorial arena was November 1994. Local fans were ready for another show, and the band was certainly ready to give it to them. Returning to the stage alongside guitarist Trey Anastasio were keyboardist Page McConnell, bassist Mike Gordon and drummer and Syracuse native Jon Fishman. Anastasio made sure to pay tribute to Fishman's homecoming midway through the second set. "We're playing tonight in a venue where he saw five of his first concerts," he said after banging out the metal tune "Big Black Furry Creatures From Mars," a song they have not played since their March 2009 reunion. Anastasio also acknowledged Fishman's father, a local orthodontist who was in the audience. When he asked everyone who had visited Dr. Fishman's practice to stand up, the crowd went wild for the regional reference.
Peter Jackson has break from big budgets in Lovely Bones
LONDON - New Zealand's Peter Jackson takes a break from blockbusters with "The Lovely Bones," an adaptation of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel about girl who is brutally raped and murdered and who looks down on her family from heaven. The film, starring Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg as the girl's grieving parents, had a royal world premiere in London late on Tuesday attended by the Prince of Wales.
Twenty-five recordings added to Grammy Hall of Fame
LOS ANGELES - The Recording Academy on Tuesday added songs by James Brown, Bob Marley, the Beach Boys, Louis Armstrong and others to its Grammy Hall of Fame, bringing the total number of titles in the collection to 851. The latest batch of 25 recordings added to the list includes Brown's 1966 "It's A Man's Man's Man's World" and Marley's 1973 album "Catch a Fire," which the Jamaican reggae great recorded with his band The Wailers, the academy said.
Night-time theater returns to Iraq as courage grows
BAGHDAD - As the clock strikes 8 p.m. Baghdad time, the curtains sweep apart at the Iraqi National Theater in what actors hope is a return to regular night-time performances 6-1/2 years after the U.S. invasion. The name of the performance, "He who seeks sweet things must also endure bitterness," reminds the hundreds of spectators of the troubles their country has been through -- and why being able to stage a play in the evening is such a big deal.
